What About Limited Lifetime Warranties

Any brand of shingle you compare, be it Owens Corning, GAF, CertainTeed, IKO, Tamko, or something else, has a warranty as well as a 30, 40, or 50 year rating. Generally, most brands offer a limited lifetime warranty which covers the shingles for the span of their life. During this time, you are protected against any damages caused by manufacturing defects or poor installation. Other features, such as wind resistance protection, algae resistance protection, and so on may be added to the limited lifetime warranty.

However, the features that are added, as well as the length of some additional warranties, will change depending on how long your roof is rated to last. For example, a 30-year dimensional shingle might have a limited warranty with a 10-year algae guarantee, whereas a 50-year luxury shingle might have a 15- or 20-year algae guarantee. Others might require you to make additional accessory shingle purchases or use a certified contractor to get the full benefits of the warranty.

That is why, ultimately, the lifespan of your roof and how well your investment is protected comes down to the coverage of the warranty and your insurance policy.

Oc Vs Gaf: Warranties

One area GAF Timberline Shingles really surpass Owens Corning is in their outstanding warranty offers. They are both pretty even when it comes to the standard roofing warranty, with 25-year limited and lifetime warranties on just about every type of shingle. In addition, their non-prorated and algae warranties are pretty even as well.

But the wind warranties are where they differ greatly. Both brands cover 60 MPH winds and up for 3-tab shingles, but GAF offers a non-prorated wind warranty for architectural shingles and premium shingles for 130+ MPH, while Owens Corning covers just 110+ for many of their premium shingle options.

What Is The Difference Between 30 40 50 Year And Lifetime Shingles

  • What Is The Difference Between
  • A new roof is one of the biggest investments you might be making this year, especially if you are starting to see the signs that your shingles need replacing. There are many kinds of shingles out there with an array of colors to select. Shingles also come in different sizes and weights. Yet, one thing seems to be common between all shingle brandsthat there are 30-year, 40-year, 50-year, and limited lifetime warranties available.

This can make purchasing shingles confused, because you might not know the difference between a 30-year shingle and a 50-year shingle. Is the difference even noticeable? Is one a smarter investment than the other?

In truth, whether one kind of warranty is better than the other comes down to a couple of key factors, which we will be discussing in this article.

Shingle Performance And Value For The Money Comparison:

Each brand makes two shingle designs: 3 tab, single-layer shingles and laminated shingles that have multiple layers fused together to form a thicker roof with better protection against the elements. This second group is often broken down into labels like Dimensional and Architectural, and Designer or Premium, but frankly, the labels are somewhat arbitrary.

Extended And Upgraded Warranties: Its Nuanced

Owens Corning and GAF roofing brands offer upgraded or extended warranties, but we dont necessarily recommend them, unless the cost is only marginal in relation to other competing quotes. Why?

    Two reasons:

First, most homeowners dont make use of the warranty they never make a claim and so their money is wasted. What if you had car insurance, but never drove the car? Roofing companies make profit by offering enhanced warranties. They would not offer them if it werent to their advantage. That should tell us something.

Additionally, asphalt shingle manufacturers are notorious for finding ways to deny warranty claims. And to be fair, most problems are the fault of the installer, and not caused by shingle defects. If your shingles fall off, as ours have shortly after they were installed on a new construction home, youll have to go after the roofing contractor, not the manufacturer.

In the end, guess who wins with upgraded shingle warranties that you pay extra for? Its not the consumer. Extended/Enhanced/Upgraded warranties, call them what you will, are expensive. And they mean big profits for GAF, Owens Corning, and all other roofing shingle manufacturers.

Pro Tip: You will want to make sure that your contractor actually registers the warranty on your behalf with the manufacturer. They will use the contract from the sale of the job as a proof of purchase.

What Are The Different Kinds Of Asphalt Shingles

There are several kinds of asphalt shingles on the market today, and depending on the style, the warranty covering these shingles also changes. You might know the basics, such as 3-tab shingles, which were popular for many years, t-locks, and also dimensional, laminate, and architectural shingles.

Dimensional shingles are the latest wave of shingles and are much more durable than 3-tab shingles. Most of the time, 3-tab shingles are rated as a 20-year shingle, though they usually only last up to 15 years with routine preventative maintenance. Dimensional shingles contain things like fiberglass that is mixed into asphalt layers.

On the other hand, there are architectural shingles. The main difference between dimensional and architectural shingles is that one is more expensive than the other. Placed side-by-side, you will see that dimensional shingles are less fancy in both color and texture. There are also more luxury options of architectural shingles for enhanced durability.

However, whether you choose plain dimensional shingles or luxury architectural laminates that look like slate, you will see that most are rated as a 30-, 40-, or 50-year shingle.

Owens Corning isnt at the top of this list, but theyre definitely not at the bottom either. When you choose a shingle brand to work with and install, the brands that provide more coverage will save you money and lead your company to more profitability.

How do I decide which is the best shingle for my roof? Im having trouble finding info on actual reliability on-line. I know what the companies claim, and I looked at Consumer Reports for lack of a better way to get an unbiased opinion, but I am concerned how these shingles stand up to real world use. I am deciding between Owens Corning Duration 30 year, GAF Prestique 30 year, GAF Timberline 30 year, and Iko Cambridge East 30 year. We live in Illinois so we see the entire range of weather. We can go from 30 below in the winter to 100 in the summer. We get a lot of rain, hail , sleet, snow, and of course high winds. We have a two story Colonial house, so only the main peak and no valleys. We will install a ridge vent, either Cobra Snow or Air Vent. Also, anyone have an opinion on the Hip and Ridge shingles? All but one of the installer use them, one of them doesnt like them but will do them. He thinks the higher profile could be a problem with high winds, but does admit it is just his opinion. Thanks for any help!
