Most Roofing Companies Favour A Brand

If youve been paying attention, you will find that every roofing company tends to support a specific brand of shingle and leans towards using them for shingle roof replacement more than any other brand.

We live in a speculative world where people are easily influenced by money and you might think it makes sense for a roofing company to use a shingle that is cheap to reduce costs.

That simply isnt true.

The reputation that a roofing company builds plays an enormous part in its success. For us, the last thing we want is a shingle that deteriorates prematurely and comes with a high number of deficiencies. Ultimately, low-quality shingles generate customer complaints-which we want to avoid like the plague.

The most important part of our business is building long-lasting relationships through quality customer service, incredible workmanship. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising and it takes a lot of effort and success in the right places to get it.

Cons Of Tamko Shingles

IKO Designer Shingles

Delamination – While some of TAMKO’s shingles like the Heritage Premium brand are a little thicker, customers have complained that some shingles delaminate easily over time.

Short lifespan – Some customers have filed class-action lawsuits against TAMKO for defective shingles and claiming the shingles failed after a short period of time and do not last as long as advertised.

Our Review Of Iko Shingle Products Starts With Learning The Lingo

One of the reasons people may have trouble navigating the available choices of asphalt roofing shingle is that some terms are generic and well-understood within the roofing industry while others are used by individual shingle manufacturers to differentiate their brands or product lines.

Architectural shingles. Laminate shingles. Dimensional shingles. Composite shingles. Fiberglass shingles. Designer, premium and luxury shingles. Strip roofing? 3-tabs? These terms might describe a shingles look, what its made of or even what its function is.

Iko Improves Dynasty Shingles Based On Feedback

Posted By: Retrofit Magazine EditorMay 13, 2021

For his annual head-to-head comparison of laminate shingles, industry insider and founder of Roofing Insights, Dmitry Lipinskiy, recently gathered with a select panel of roofing contractors to test and review a dozen products from North Americas major roofing brands. When the dust settled, and the scores were tallied, IKO Dynasty earned a top ranking with a total of 4.55 out of a possible 5 points.

IKOs Dynasty shingle jumped from fourth place in last years testing to the top place this year. This rise can be attributed to IKOs aim to always be improving its product offerings.

Perhaps most impressive about Dynastys 2021 performance was that it jumped from fourth place in last years testing to the top placing this year. This rise can be attributed to IKOs aim to always be improving its product offerings.

In 2020, Lipinskiys testing in the granule-loss category held Dynasty back, so IKOs product development team took that feedback and focused on improving the product for 2021. Without a reduction in asphalt, nor in the performance of the shingle, IKO changed the granule composition in the head lap of Dynasty shingles, minimizing excess hitchhiker granules.

The upgrade was duly noted by the testers.

Dynasty earned full marks in six of the nine test categories, benefiting from such features as its True Square Advantage and its ArmourZone nailing strip.

Home Roofing Options: Are Iko Shingles A Good Choice

Although you might not think of the roof over your head every day, it plays an important role. In addition to providing shelter from the elements, home roofing also helps maintain a comfortable environment indoors. By regulating the temperature as the sun beats down or the wind blows past, a roof allows you to enjoy pleasant and consistent indoor conditions.

There are a lot of factors to consider when making decisions about home roofing, including aesthetics, cost, life span, maintenance, environment, and geographical location.

When choosing a roof for your custom home, you want to be confident that it will stand the test of time and protect your investment for years to come. Adair Homes has partnered with IKO to provide high-quality roofing at a competitive price.

The Bottom Line: Should You Install Iko Roof Shingles

Why We Use IKO Dynasty Shingles

The good news is that IKO has actually discontinued the production of its faulty shingles lines that have been the cause of all the negative reviews as well as law suites.

At this point, IKO is working hard to manufacture much better quality shingles with improved formulations.

Installing IKO shingles may be the right decision if you are looking for a decent quality shingle at a good price, with above average warranty protection.

Dont forget to only schedule your IKO roof install in sunny warm weather to avoid any issues with the shingles sealant.

The Iko Roofpro Program

Contractors can join the IKO ROOFPRO Program. Most major brands offer this type of training and a certification or membership program of some sort.

In addition to going through training, the contractor must meet IKO qualifications such as being licensed and insured with at least two years of being in business, without legal judgements against the contractor in the last 5 years.

This gives the consumer peace of mind. IKOs ROOFPRO membership can help roofing contractors get jobs and might allow them to charge higher prices for their work. They can also offer enhanced warranty protection as part of the ROOFPRO Program.

Did you know? The tear-off of the old roof and installation by an IKO ROOFPRO contractor is required for the Extended Iron Clad Protection from IKO .

Pro Tip: An experienced roofing contractor and crew will successfully install any brand of shingle, whether or not theyre certified by that brand.

We dont recommend paying more for a brand-certified contractor, but it is essential that the roofer you choose is licensed, insured, and has a track record of successful installations in your community.

Iko Warranties Are Rather Good:

IKO warranties are amongst the best in the market, with the top ones being easiest to qualify for than other brands.

Here is a plus for IKO: a lifetime limited warranty covers 80% of IKO shingle lines. This is the highest percentage amongst leading shingle brands.

A tip about warranties: To be covered by the best warranty, install the roof with one of the IKO hip and ridge shingle options. These are Hip & Ridge 12 Hip & Ridge Plus, or Ultra HP.

This is uniform across other brands. GAF requires at least two other of their components to be used.

No Tear-Off No Problem: Other brands offer the best warranties only when there is a tear-off, which is not the case with IKO.

Is Iko Shingles Warranty Any Good

Overall, IKO provides homeowners with some of the best warranties among other top roof shingles manufacturers. Their top warranty is much simpler to qualify for in comparison to warranties offered by other companies.

One of the best things about IKOs warranty is that unlike most shingle manufacturers, IKO does not require you to use their underlayment, which essentially means that you do not need to tear off the old shingle, before installing new ones. This factor alone can easily save you $1,000 1,500 on tear off fees depending on the size of your roof.

Out of the 10 shingle lines that IKO produces, 8 are covered by their lifetime limited warranty. This is the highest percentage of product lines covered by a lifetime warranty among all asphalt shingle manufacturers.

For its premium lifetime shingles, IKO offers 100% coverage for the first 15 years . After this time, the warranty is prorated.

Nevertheless, IKO warranty system isnt perfect. One of the main flaws of IKO warranties is warranty transferability. Other brands offer much more flexible warranties, whereas IKOs warranty allows for transfers only once during the initial 10 years.

Additionally, the cost of the transfer is $100, and your paperwork must contain the proper property sale documentation, the original Proof of Purchase for your shingles, and the request form. If the owner dies, the warranty is no longer valid.

Every year, our Roofing Insights team gets together with some reputable roofers from across the country to perform a simple test that will help tell us what shingles are good and which ones could improve and get better. These are the criteria that we test the roofs on:

  • Feedback friendly

Some of these factors might mean more to you than others, but weve found that each one of them is very important when it comes to getting a good understanding of a roofing shingle and its ability to stand up in the market.

Iko Roof Installation Cost

In addition to the cost of the IKO shingles and roof accessories, you have to factor in the cost of professional labor to install the roof.

Typically, roof installation cost is about $1.25 to 2.50 per square foot This usually accounts for 30-50% of the total price, depending on the complexity of the job involved.

You can use our Roofing Calculator to estimate the total cost of installing a new roof.

Did You Know? West and East coast cities are notorious for having very high roofing labor rates, as much as $75-90 per hour in some areas. In the South and Mid West you can have roofers charging as low as $35-45 per hour. However, the national average for roofing contractors is about $55-65 per hour.

Here is what you can do to ensure that you get the best quality roof installation for the right price:

Get at least 3-4 roof price estimates from local pros. Usually, the mid-range price is the one to go with.

Be sure to ONLY hire a roofing company that is fully licensed and insured.

Request that your installer put up an breathable underlayment

Install proper roof ventilation, as poor venting is the cause of many shingles problems as well as denied warranty claims.

Ask your roofer to use at least three components from a the same roofing system by a single manufacturer. This will ensure that the roof is most durable and will give the best warranty protection.

The Top Surface Layer Consists Of Mineral Granules That We Quarry And Crush Ourselves

These granules serve three important functions:

  • They protect the underlying asphalt layer from the suns ultraviolet rays which can potentially damage or cause it to break down, making the shingle brittle and less flexible.
  • They provide color and texture to create the beautiful roof you see from street level. IKO uses an exclusive, advanced color blending technology for some of the most stunning looks and effects available.
  • They contribute to the shingles fire resistance.

Professional roofing crews install asphalt shingles with a nail gun, using four to six nails per shingle depending on a number of variables, such as size, construction, roofing conditions, location and temperature. Strips of tacky sealant help to adhere the shingle. The suns radiant heat activates this sealant to further strengthen its adhesive bond to help prevent wind-uplift and blow-off.

Iko Dynasty Vs Iko Cambridge Shingles

Introducing IKO Dynasty Class 3 Impact Resistant Shingles

IKO Dynasty shingles belong to the IKO Performance Shingle line, an upgrade from the IKO Cambridge for a little extra cost. Dynasty shingles also use straight cut but their colour pattern is completely different, adding curb appeal. For example, the picture shows a popular Edmonton choice – IKO Dynasty, brownstone.

IKO Dynasty roofing shingles are vibrant. They have more than two shades of colours and a random pattern. This one on the “wild side”.

Another advantage for the Dynasty roofing shingles is they are able to resist winds up to 210 km/h. This is due to their specially designed nailing zone: a much larger nailing zone promotes accurate fastening.

What Makes A High Quality Shingle

A high-quality shingle is one that is able to perform against the elements, look good throughout its lifespan and fits your budget. If we break it down the main factors that make up a high-quality shingle are:

At C.D. Roofing & Construction Ltd. we will never sell you on any particular shingle. We will give you our honest, objective and most professional opinion. If you ask for a quote on Owens Corning products, were going to give you a quote on Owens Cornings roof. At the end of the day, we want you to be happy and comfortable with your investment.

If you ask what we recommend based on our experience, we lean towards BP shingles for most roofing projects because, during the last 10 years of installing BP products, they have proven reliable and performed well for all of our clients.

We admit we are slightly biased because we also believe in keeping hard-earned Canadian dollars in Canada. Why send money out of the country when we have a company that does just as good a job in providing a roof over our heads?

For us, every roofing project can present a differnt set of variables based on personal preference, budget and practicality. Regardless of what shingle you go with you can count on us to lead you in the right direction. The most important thing is that we get your roof done right, so youre happy for years to come.
