- In adults with weakened immune systems, Shingrix was between 68% and 91% effective in preventing shingles, depending on their underlying immunocompromising condition.
In people 70 years and older who had healthy immune systems, Shingrix immunity remained high throughout 7 years following vaccination.

Chicago-area pharmacies have already started appointments for updated booster shots, many of which are ramping up this week.
CVS announced Friday, one day after the CDC issued its recommendation for the new vaccine, that some locations were already offering up doses of both Moderna and Pfizer’s revamped booster shots. Appointments were opened up and several continue to be available for this week.
Walgreens locations are also now booking appointments for the newly approved COVID booster shots that specifically target the highly contagious BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants, the pharmacy said in a release Friday.
This season, we encourage everyone to stay protected by getting vaccinated with this more targeted updated COVID-19 booster in addition to receiving their flu shot or other routine immunizations in a single visit,” Dr. Anita Patel, vice president of Walgreens’ Pharmacy Services Development, said in the release.
According to a Friday announcement from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the state expects to receive 580,000 doses of the new booster. And that’s in addition to the 150,000 doses Chicago is primed to receive, IDPH said.
Illinois health officials also urged people Friday to begin getting their doses this week.

Vaccinate To Decrease Your Shingles Risk
Your chances of getting shingles increase as you get older. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults age 50 and older get vaccinated against shingles.
Two vaccines, recombinant zoster vaccine and zoster vaccine live are available in the United States to prevent shingles. Shingrix is the preferred vaccine.
The CDC recommends Shingrix for adults 50 years and older, whether or not they have already had shingles or previously received the Zostavaxvaccine, which has been used since 2006. You should get two doses of Shingrix, two to six months apart. Two doses of Shingrix are more than 90% effective at preventing shingles. Shingrix is also 90% effective in helping to prevent PHN in those who get shingles despite being vaccinated.
While Zostavax is still available, studies show it is less effective than Shingrix.Zostavax may be used in some healthy adults 60 years and older, for example, in those who are allergic to Shingrix.
There is no specific time that you must wait after having shingles before receiving the shingles vaccine. But its probably best to hold off until the shingles rash has disappeared before getting vaccinated.

How Do I Get The Shingles Vaccination
Once you become eligible for the shingles vaccination, a GP or practice nurse will offer you the vaccine when you attend the surgery for general reasons.
You can have a shingles vaccine at the same time as most other vaccines. But try to leave 7 days between the shingles vaccine and a coronavirus vaccine, so that if you have any side effects you’ll know which vaccine they were from.

What If You’ve Already Had Shingles
If you’re age 60 or older and had shingles but not the Zostavax vaccine, the CDC says you can go ahead and have the shot “to help prevent future occurrences.”
What if you’re younger? Between the ages of 50 and 59, it’s reasonable to talk to your doctor about having the shot, says Lipman. After all, the vaccine has been evaluated for safety in that group.
Below the age of 50, says Lipman, wait at least until you hit the half-century mark to have that discussion. “Shingles is uncommon before 50, and if you have it that early, it would prompt me to see why and what’s going on with your immune system,” he says.
If you get the vaccine, don’t do so while you have an active rash. In fact, it’s best to wait 12 months after the rash has disappeared, according to William Schaffner, M.D., professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
That’s because having had shingles may actually act as a short-term immune booster,” he says, although “we dont know for certain.”
Although the Zostavax vaccine is safe for most people, you’ll have to skip it if you are allergic to any of its components, are pregnant or could become pregnant within the next four weeks, have an illness that affects your immune system, or are on a medication that reduces immunity.
And if you are 60 or older and havent had shingles or the vaccine, get the shot, Schaffner says.
