How Does Medicare Provide Coverage For The Shingles Vaccine
Medicare prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans that provide prescription drug coverage generally cover all commercially available vaccinations. These plans will cover the vaccination medication and the administration of the shot by your doctor or physician. Depending on your plan benefits, you may have to pay a copayment or coinsurance amount. Make sure to follow your planâs guidelines for this vaccination to be covered.
You will pay the least amount of money out of pocket if you are vaccinated at a pharmacy in your drug planâs network. A summary of ways you can pay for your shingles vaccine include:
Medicare
- Medicare Part D plans cover the shingles vaccine. There may be a copay, or you may need to pay the full amount and get reimbursed for some of the cost.
- Original Medicare Part B does not cover the shingles vaccine.
Medicaid
- To learn if your Medicaid coverage pays for the Shingles vaccine, please contact your Medicaid insurer.

What Parts Of Medicare Cover The Shingles Vaccine
Original Medicare Part A and Part B doesnt cover the shingles vaccine. However, there are other Medicare plans that may cover at least part of the costs. These include:

- If your doctor cant bill your plan directly, ask your doctor to coordinate with an in-network pharmacy. The pharmacy might be able to give you the vaccine and bill your plan directly.
- File your vaccine bill for reimbursement with your plan if you cant do either of the options above.
If you have to file for reimbursement, youll have to pay the full price of the shot when you get it. Your plan should reimburse you, but the amount covered will vary based on your plan and if the pharmacy was in your network.

Vaccines Covered By Medicare Part B
Medicare Part B covers three important vaccines as part of its preventive care benefits.

- Flu vaccine: Annual vaccine given in one shot before or during flu season, usually November through April
- Pneumonia vaccine: One-time vaccine given in two shots at least one year apart

What Is Shingles?
Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It affects the skin, causing a rash, and sometimes it leads to nerve pain. People who had chickenpox have a higher chance of developing shingles.
While the virus may reappear anytime in people of many ages, people over 50 are the most likely to be affected by it.
Shingles starts off as a pain and itching on a specific spot of the skin. After a few days, the rash becomes visible and it looks similar to chickenpox. An episode of shingles usually lasts about 2-4 weeks.
Even if shingles is not contagious, the virus can spread to someone who has not had chickenpox. The person doesnt contact shingles, but chickenpox. The virus can spread by making contact with the fluid from the blisters. Also, its good to know that chickenpox has a higher contagiousness than shingles.
Does Medicare Cover the Shingles Shot?
Sadly, the answer to this question is no, unless you have a prescription plan.
The shingles shot is not be covered by Medicare Part A or Part B. Unlike other vaccines, it can only be covered by Medicare prescription drug plans . Thus, you have to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D drug plan to cover the costs.

How Does Medicare Part D Cover The Shingles Vaccine
Medicare Part D can cover vaccines and prescription drugs. Your vaccine and its cost are on a list in your plans drug formulary, alongside other prescription drug costs. Your vaccine cost counts toward your deductible like other Part D services. You may have to pay the full price for your shingles vaccine if you have not met your annual deductible.

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus . It produces a painful rash with fluid-filled blisters and typically shows up on one side of the body. The same virus that causes chickenpox causes shingles. Anyone who has had chickenpox in the past is at risk of getting shingles.

The virus lays dormant in the nervous system. Immunity likely plays a role in preventing the virus from reactivating. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults older than 50 get the shingles vaccine. Shingles can cause long-term nerve pain and nerve damage. Getting two shingles vaccine doses two to six months apart has proven to be very effective at preventing shingles.

Can You Get The Shingles Vaccine For Free
The shingles vaccine is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, a pharmaceutical company. GSK has a patient assistance program that may provide the vaccine to you at no cost if you meet these eligibility criteria:
- You dont have prescription drug coverage or a Part D plan and have spent at least $600 during the calendar year
- You are an adult, age 19 or older
- You live in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia
- You dont qualify for Puerto Ricos Government Health Plan
- Your maximum monthly gross income does not exceed certain limits, depending on where you reside and your household size
- You apply through your health care provider, who will register for the patient assistance program and submit your application
How Does Medicare Cover The Shingles Vaccine
Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, does not cover the shingles vaccination but Medicare Part D does. To get this covered, you must enroll in either a stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage . You may have a copayment for the shingles vaccine.

Shingrix is not the first shingles vaccine, but it is the only one currently on the market in the United States.Instead of using a live virus,the vaccine uses a protein from the virus to trigger an immune response. It is administered in two doses two to six months apart.
This shingles vaccine has been shown to decrease the risk for shingles by 97% for people between 50 and 69 years old and by 91% for people 70 and older. It reduces complications as well. The risk for post-herpetic neuralgia goes down by 91% and 89%, respectively, in those age groups.

Who Should Not Get The Shingrix Vaccine
Those who should not receive Shingrix are:
- People with allergic reactions to any part of the vaccine
- People with allergic reaction after a dose of Shingrix.
- People who currently have shingles.
- Pregnant women should wait to get Shingrix.
If you have a cold or any other minor illness, you can get Shingrix, however if you have moderate or severe symptoms, with or without fever, you should wait till recovering before getting the vaccine.

Do I Have To Pay For Vaccines With Medicare
You pay nothing for vaccines covered by Part B flu, pneumonia and Hepatitis B as long as your provider accepts Medicare.
Your cost for vaccines covered by Part D will depend on your specific plan. You may pay a copay or coinsurance, but it will depend on your plan and the provider.
The location where you get vaccinated may also affect your cost. For example, your costs may be lower if you get a vaccine at a pharmacy versus in a doctors office.

Pura Health Insurance Plans Renewed For 2022
The Benefits Committee of the Purdue University Retirees Association has renewed the PURcare and Medicare Advantage PPO group health insurance plans with UnitedHealthcare for 2022. As in the past, the objective was to maintain the best medical and drug insurance plans, at the lowest premium possible, while preserving your ability to see the Medicare provider of your choice.
Your committee is announcing the following monthly premiums for 2022:
PURcare . $280.77/member
UHC Medicare Advantage PPO . $172.91/member
The 2022 monthly PURcare premium has decreased $0.66 from the 2021 monthly premium.
Historically, the PURcare premium has been:
An additional historical note: The PURcare monthly premium for 2022 is less than the monthly premium for 2010.
For PURcare members with prescription coverage from the Veterans Administration, the 2022 supplement-only monthly premium will be $178.30/member, a decrease of $3.64.
The 2022 monthly premium for the Medicare Advantage PPO Plan will be $172.91. This is a decrease of $5.36 . There will be no change to Hospital and Medical co-pays or the Annual Out-of-Pocket Maximum.
There have been no significant changes to the benefits provided by either plan for 2022. Silver Sneakers continues to be included in both plans.
If you elect to terminate your PURA group coverage for a non-PURA plan, you will not be permitted to rejoin later.
