  • Poor immune system people like older people and children.
  • People who have other health conditions such as diabetes, HIV, skin cancer, etc.

Scalp Pain And Hair Loss

Shingles of the scalp can lead to PHN pain in the areas of the scalp where the rash was, and long after the skin has cleared. It can also cause hair loss from scratching or combing too hard during a shingles attack, leading to a condition called cicatricial alopecia or scarring alopecia.

Hair loss occurs when the shingles rash destroys hair follicle cells responsible for new hair growth. With these cells damaged, the hair loss is permanent.

Spinal Cord Or Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

These are often used to treat several different types of neuropathic pain. Electrodes are placed underneath the skin along the affected peripheral nerves. Before using this technique, doctors will do a test using a wire electrode to get a sense of how the patient will respond.

After the electrodes have been placed above the peripheral nerve, a weak electrical current is sent to the nerve. By stimulating a sensory pathway that doesnt cause pain, experts believe that this electrical signal to the brain can trick the brain into turning off the painful signal, bringing relief to the patient.

Like with most things in life, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When it comes to scars and the injuries that may cause them, that means youll want to optimize the healing process by keeping wounds clean and moist to prevent infection, says Shari Marchbein, MD, a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in acne scarring. Remember, scars are permanent and result from damage to the underlying collagen in the dermis, says Dr. Marchbein. In her office, patients get treated with Vaseline Original Healing Jelly after surgical procedures. She knows how to get rid of scars and opts for the ointment because it creates a protective barrier on the skins surface, which speeds wound healing and improves scar appearance and prevents scabbing.

Promising review:I suffered from cystic acne from around 1922 years old. I decided enough was enough so I saw a dermatologist and got on oral and topical antibiotics. They recommended I get facials to help with the dark mark scarring once my acne cleared. As a 22-year-old, that expense wasnt realistic. So I decided to try this along with my regimen. Let me tell you: it WORKS! If you are consistent and disciplined. I use it every morning and night along with my topicals and you can see the difference just nine months makes. No more hiding my face. I rarely wear makeup anymore. Im just a normal 20-something in Los Angeles. This can work for you too! I definitely recommend trying it and keeping with it. The first photo is from July and the second is from October. The third is from early April of the next year. All I can say is THANK YOU.Danielle

I am also one of the lucky folks that get recurring shingles. They have always been on my lower body, once on my neck and just recently after a car accident on my face! They were on my left cheek and are not going away like the ones on my body. They are blood red and look terrible. Any ideas to deal with the scarring and to get the redness to fade faster? Thanks in advance!

How Long Do Shingles Scabs Take To Heal

Nursing Question: Shingles

Shingles scabs will take about 2 to 4 weeks to heal. The exact time frame will be different for each person. It depends on several factors, including the severity of your rash and how soon you get treatment.

However, even after the scabs have cleared up, the pain and discomfort can last for several weeks or months.

You should also contact a doctor if you experience any of the following:

Avoid Scratching The Blisters

It might be tempting to scratch or pick at the blisters, especially if theyre causing you discomfort. Know that theyll eventually crust over and fall off if you leave them alone.

Scratching at blisters or scabs can lead to infection and scarring. Cleaning and covering them regularly with a new sterile bandage can help reduce the likelihood that youll pick at the rash.

Keeping the rash clean is one part of the process. The other is to make sure you bandage it properly, especially if the rash is still weeping .

When dealing with a painful shingles rash, your best bet is to use bandages that are:

When youre switching the dressing, allow the skin to dry before covering it with a new bandage.

In addition to keeping the rash protected, bandaging also prevents you from passing the varicella-zoster virus to another person. Be sure to keep bandages on any areas of the rash that havent scabbed over yet.

What Does It Mean To Let Shingles Run Its Course

This refers to the typical course a shingles rash takes, even with antiviral treatment:

  • A person may develop a tingling sensation or pain in a certain area on the skin, most commonly on the waistline. This may last for several days.
  • Next, a rash develops in the area. The skin turns red, with fluid-filled bumps . Its during this time that a shingles rash can spread the VZV to another person who hasnt had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine.
  • After 1 to 2 weeks, these fluid-filled bumps start to crust over. At this point, the rash can no longer spread to other people. It can then take 1 to 2 more weeks for the crusted areas to fully scab over and heal.

Trying to put your best face forward when you dont feel confident is a nightmare. You have already dealt with the nastiness of shingles across your gourd, you shouldnt have to suffer aftereffects of scars too. Try some of these face-friendly methods:

    • Makeup. Depending on the location of the scars, you may opt for Camouflage instead of scar removal. Companies like Changing Faces and Kat Von D have developed concealer formulas pigmented enough to cover the darkest of scars, including tattoos and acne.
    • Collagen injections. Well-known for plumping up lips and smoothing out wrinkles, collagen injections can also improve the presence and texture of scars.
    • Chemical peels. In this process, an exfoliating chemical concoction is applied to the face to remove tops layers of skin. Its helpful for faint scars and discoloration common after outbreaks. Bonus, it clears up some wrinkles, acne, and sun damage too.
    • Dermabrasion. Here a small electronic device is used to lift top layers of skin with abrasion. Not just helpful for scars, but basically all face skin issues.
    • Punch grafts. For deeper pockets, a hole can be punched into the skin to remove scar tissue and replaced with an unscarred patch of skin .

Because I have scars from shingles and some worrisome red blotchy areas, where the shingles were, I did some research today. According to my research, shingles scars tend to be deep red or even purple. The scars can lay flat against the skin though some, like mine, can be raised or even pitted. I read that cooked oatmeal cooled to a soft stage, can be applied directly to the skin and rubbed into it. Rub in the oatmeal for 15-20 minutes per day. It is said by many that this process will fade or eliminate shingles scars. Rubbing the oatmeal into the skin everyday, some claim, will not only help scarring but also it will ease neuralgia pain and itching. I’m going to try this oatmeal treatment. Hopefully, it will help.

Yes. You just cook the oatmeal as you normally would to eat it.

Then, let it cool and rub it into your shingles scars or in the area where you have nerve pain for 15 or 20 minutes every day. I don’t know if it will work but according to a lot of people it does help to reduce the scars and pain.

    Tiffany,

You are correct that oatmeal will definitely help with the itching and burning of neuralgia, although the effect is temporary. As soon as the oatmeal is removed, the itching returns. Having had severe itching due to allergic reactions to medications involving my entire body, I would take oatmeal baths 3x per day.

I am uncertain if it helps resolve the redness.

    Best Wishes

    • Try not to scratch or pick at the blisters.
    • Keep the blisters moist until they heal over. One way to do this is to cover them with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, and a nonstick bandage.
    • Take an over-the-counter pain medicine, such as acetaminophen , ibuprofen , or naproxen . Read and follow all instructions on the label.
    • Avoid close contact with people until the blisters have healed. It is very important for you to avoid contact with anyone who has never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine. Young babies and anyone who is pregnant or has a hard time fighting infection are especially at risk.

What Causes Chickenpox Scars In Adults

Chickenpox causes blisters all over the body accompanied by severe itching. It is imperative to resist the temptation to scratch the blisters. The two major causes of chickenpox scars are:

    • Excessive scratching during infection, which damages the skin and creates deep wounds.
    • Skin inflammation which results in indented scars.

The itching sensation creates a raw area when the bump is scratched. After 5-7 days, once the crust sheds naturally, it can lead to permanent scarring of the skin tissue. The scarring also depends on the intensity of the skin infection, the severity of the inflammation, and the depth of the blister formation. Prominent areas prone to getting chickenpox scars are the face, chest and back.
