Use the hammers claw to pull out all the burst nails. If you can, ask another person to watch from inside the roof and mark the location of the nails head. If the roof is made of shingles, lift the damaged shingle.

About an inch just above the hole left by the last nail, drive another nail into the leaky roof. If youve got someone on the roof, ask the person to point you in the direction of a solid area in which the nail can dive deeply into the wood.

It has to be a place free of joints, knots, fissures, and splinters where the person advises placing the fresh nail.

Using a smaller trowel, add 1/2 teaspoonful of asphalt cement to the hole underneath the shingle. Fold a piece of felt 4 by 2 inches in half to get a square 2 by 2 inches.

Press on the cement with the folds pointing toward the leaky roofs peak. Asphalt cement must fill the shingles hole after being pressed back into position.

When you have a level asphalt roof, apply some asphalt cement to the replacement nail and the hole left by the last nail.

Installing Shingles Over An Existing Layer

If you install new shingles over an existing layer of shingles, you are likely to encounter many problems, including curled shingles. This is because new shingles are unlikely to line up exactly with the old ones, preventing them from sealing properly. Moreover, if there is mold or rot on the existing roof, this will cause problems on the new roof installed above it.

Curled Or Cracking Shingles

Shingles only last for a short time. Asphalt Shingles may become distorted, fractured, or curled as they reach the end of their functional life.

If you notice one or two damaged shingles, fixing them might help your roof last longer. But if you see a lot of deformed shingles, you might require a complete roof replacement.

But you can extend their use if you are keen on maintaining all the other factors that could lead to your roofs premature wear and tear. This includes making sure that your windows are in good condition as well as your water pipes.

How To Repair Or Replace Your Roof

There are two ways to describe what you see happening to your roof shingles. Both are mostly used interchangeably, but there are some subtle differences between the two descriptions.

Curling is the most common problem with roof shingles. Curling is when the corners of the shingle loosen and curl together. Curling shingles will expose the roof underneath, which can cause further damage to your house. A curled shingle usually indicates a problem with the shingles themselves or the way the shingles were installed.

Buckling describes a shingle that is raised in the middle. A buckle forms when moisture is trapped under the shingle. This is most likely a sign of poor ventilation.

Curling and buckling are the most common phrases used to describe problems with roof shingles. You may also hear the term fishmouthing or blistering. Fishmouthing or cupping refers to when the edges of the single rise slightly in the middle. Blistering refers to the bubble or blister that occurs when gas tries to escape from the layers below the shingles. Whatever you call it, it means your roof needs repair.

However, multiple cupped and curled shingles can be easily repaired by trained roofing professionals.

Fixing Your Roof Shingles Before They Become Dangerous

How to Repair Wooden Shingles

Has your roof started curling and buckling? If so, youre not alone. More than half of homeowners will have this problem at some point in their lifetime. Its not a sign that the roof will fail immediately, but sometimes it can indicate your roof will be dangerous soon.

Curling, buckling, and warping are just a few problems that homeowners have with their shingles. Sadly, curling shingles can create cracks that eventually spread across the roof. These defects cause leaks, which are prone to occur because of heavy rainfalls and windstorms.

How To Repair Water Damage From A Roof Leak

Controlling and cleaning up the water leaking into the house is the first stage in repairing water damage. Homeowners can frequently perform this independently, depending on their level of expertise and confidence.

Place the trough on the floor next to the leak, for instance, if water falls from the roof.

Second, dry out the floor, furniture, and other items that have come in contact with water. Cleaning is necessary to stop the growth of mold.

You can clear up your gutters and see if water was spilling into the house and if an external leak has caused the rain damage.

Curled Or Cupped Shingles

When youre checking out your homes roof, you should look for curled or cupped shingles. Curled and cupped shingles are much more brittle than undamaged shingles, and they are less effective at protecting your roof from rain and wind.

This could simply be an indication that your roof is older and ready to be replaced, but it can also be indicative of more than just roof damage. Curled or cupped shingles are often a sign that your homes attic doesnt have proper venting. In that case, you would need to repair or replace the roof, but you may also have to have your attics ventilation system repaired.

Why Do Roofing Shingles Curl

How To Fix Loose Shingles

Do a few curled up shingles really mean you need to replace the entire roof? First, lets identify why they may curl:

The Attic Ventilation Is Poor: Excessive heat in the attic under the shingles can cause moisture buildup. As a result, mold begins to grow under the shingles causing them to lift and curl.

Defective Installation: If the original roofers installed the shingles incorrectly, misaligned them, or did not nail them down properly, the shingles may begin to curl. It is also possible that the materials were defective.

Severe Weather: The roof is exposed to every kind of harsh weather. Heavy rain, sun, hail, wind, and snow all take a toll on the ability of a roof to do its job properly.

Age: Nothing lasts forever and so it is with roofing shingles. Depending on the type of shingle, the life expectancy may be from 15 to 30 years. As shingles age and begin to deteriorate, they may curl.

How To Repair Curled & Cuffed Roof Shingles

The roof of your home endures a lot over the years, between sunlight beating down, heavy rain falling, high winds howling, and other elements that pummel it throughout the seasons. As a result, your roof may show some signs of light wear and tear, like curled and cupped shingles. These wont necessarily warrant a full replacement quite yet you can bide yourself some time by repairing the curled or cupped roof shingles yourself.

How Long Should You Wait Before Replacing Your Roof Shingles

When having your roof installed, the first thing you probably asked your contractor is the lifespan of the type of material you chose. There are different types of shingles, with those made with asphalt being the most common ones.

Asphalt shingles can last anywhere from 10 to 50 years, while wood ones have a life span of 25 to 30 years. Wood shake shingle roofs stay strong from 35 to 40 years.

The best way to make sure that your roof is in optimal condition is to conduct regular check-ups. If you have minimal experience with roof repairs, a simple visual inspection can tell you a lot. You will be able to easily spot cracked, curled, and missing shingles.

A much more reliable route is to get professionals to inspect your roof once in a while. These individuals know exactly what to look for not only on a superficial but also on a deeper one because they have the skills and tools to do the job.

Once issues are found, you can take the vital steps of repairing your roof. Make sure to wait for a day with optimal weather, preferably moderate. Do not do the job while cold as this can crack the shingles, nor while hot as this can make the sealing material harder to manage.

How Old Is This Roof Wear

Regardless, your roof photos show severe wear and curled shingle tabs that we see at the end of roof life – your photos of this worn roof slope show that every single shingle tab is curled up from a corner that combined with the significant granule loss would be very unusual on a six-year-old roof.

We comment further and provide some roof failure diagnostic questions just below.

From looking at the photographs, and recognizing that we are not looking at the entire roof, some comments and questions arise that should help sort out this “early roof failure” mystery:

  • The roof slopes in your photographs are totally worn out
  • This does not look like a six year old roof
  • Your comments suggest that other roof slopes are fine.
  • Before we assume that the wear difference is due to the building, roof ventilation, weather exposure, or a similar cause, let’s consider that the roof is reported to be just six years old – actually we wonder if that’s quite right.

What Questions Should I Ask My Roofer

To find the best roofing contractor near you, there are a number of questions you should ask. Below are some of the most important ones to address.

  • Are your workers licensed?

  • Can you provide proof of liability and workers comp insurance?

  • What permits are necessary and are these included in the estimate?

  • What is the quality warranty for work done on the roof?

  • What types of damage are not included in that warranty?

  • If the roof requires replacement, does removing the old roof factor into the cost estimate?

  • What will you do with the leftover debris?

  • Do you use ladder stabilizers or standoffs to protect the gutters?

  • How will you protect my landscaping while youre working on the roof?

  • What are the plans to clean up the property after the repairs are complete?

  • What will you do if theres bad weather during my repair project?

  • Is your company doing the project, or will you work with a subcontractor?

If youre hiring someone to repair or replace the roof on your house, you want to ensure they will do exactly what you need at a reasonable cost. On top of that, all costs should factor into your initial estimate with no hidden fees. What Curling And Buckling Shingles Mean For Your Roof

Floridas heat and humidity, along with the effects of hurricanes and frequent thunderstorms, are hard on shingles, making it even more important to keep a close eye on your roof for damage. Often this damage comes in the form of curling or buckling which can signal major issues with your roof. Both curling and buckling are most often caused by moisture of your roof decking or underlayment.

  • Buckling shingles appear as if they are being pushed upward from beneath. It can be the result of a lack of insulation or poor attic ventilation, as well as improper installation.
  • Curling shingles have turned up edges, making the central part of the shingle look like it is sinking . Curling is common, and like buckling, negatively affects the appearance of your roof. The causes of curling can be poor quality materials or normal wear and tear.

While you can identify either issue looking at your roof from the ground, at the first sign of buckling and curling shingles, you should call your trusted roofing professionals, like the experts at The Roof Guys, for an inspection.

Why Does My Cedar Roof Curl

Curling & Buckling Shingles: Why It Happens & How To Fix Them

Curling on wood is a natural process that reflects the continual barrage of the sun’s ultraviolet rays and weather effects like rain on wood. The effects of aging are a necessary consequence of having natural material as the roof of your home. The more elements your cedar roof must protect you from, the faster it is likely to age and show curling shingles. Cedar shake siding curling is common and can also be caused by the same factors as your cedar roof. If you’re wondering why shingles curl, here are some common reasons:

  • Climate and weather: Cold weather, excessive rain or constant exposure to sunlight are all reasons your cedar roof may start curling. If you’re in an area that receives steady rainfall, the additional moisture could affect your shingles more quickly than in a climate that doesn’t get as much rain.

  • Damages: High winds, harsh storms and large branches can also curl your shingles.

  • Poor installation: If your roof was installed poorly, it’s more likely to experience curling and other damages than if professionals installed it properly.
