Are Owens Corning Duration Shingles Energy Star Rated

Indeed, they are. We dont have to tell you how important an ENERGY STAR rating is when it comes to saving money on your cooling and heating bills. Just like energy-efficient home appliances, your roofing can have those same qualities.

Owens Corning Duration Shingles will help reflect the suns solar energy and reduce the heat transfer into your homes interior. Roof Replacement Part : Should Contractors Use Gaf Owens Corning Or Iko

This is a guest blog post by Ryan Carey, of My 3 Quotes.

Lets face it, its no fun when you realize you need to fork out thousands of dollars for a new roof. If youre like many homeowners, you avoid it as long as you can despite all the tell-tale signs: You have more granules in your gutters than on your roof, you have old organic shingles that are curling up like diplomas on the south side of your house, or worse yet- there are several areas of your ceiling that are turning brown from leaks.

Despite your many attempts at doing hail dances around your house in the hopes that your insurance company may have to foot the bill, you are stuck with having to pay out of pocket since Mother Nature has not cooperated. Once that bitter pill is swallowed, its time to get serious and do some research on the best shingles and contractors out there.

3-tab to Architectural

Asphalt roofing didnt have much variation in the past. Shingles were made in the 3-tab style, which is a flat shingle with 3 rectangles per piece. Today, the vast majority of shingles are of the architectural variety. They have a cedar-shake look, with overlay pieces to give the shingle dimension and shadow lines. They are thicker and cover up roof line imperfections better. They also have longer warranties.

Gaf Vs Owens Corning Shingles Warranty Coverage

Another huge part of protecting your new roof investment is ensuring you have a comprehensive warranty attached to it. The weather and other outdoor elements are often unpredictable, so its critical that youre protected in case anything goes wrong.

GAFs Warranties

GAF is considered to have some of the best warranties in the industry, which makes them a trusted brand for roofers everywhere. If something goes wrong with your shingles, contractors and roofers are usually the first ones to blame, so they prefer to work with suppliers that offer better materials and warranties to make their job easier.

GAF roofers who have the prestigious Master Elite certification can issue a Golden Pledge warranty. Not only does this warranty cover materials, but it also covers labor and installation. When you have the protection of the Golden Pledge warranty, a GAF representative will inspect your roof once its complete to make sure its up to their brand standards.

Another bonus of GAFs warranties? Theyre transferable if the ownership of your home changes, which is an uncommon amenity in most brand warranties.

Owens Cornings Warranties

Owens Corning also offers comprehensive warranties for their shingles. Their warranties are tiered, based on the types of products installed, the number of products installed, and the certifications of the installer.

Shingles: Owens Corning Duration Vs Gaf Prestique Vs Iko

Lab Test: SureNail® Technology TruDefinition® Shingles

How do I decide which is the best shingle for my roof? I’m having trouble finding info on actual reliability on-line. I know what the companies claim, and I looked at Consumer Reports for lack of a better way to get an “unbiased” opinion, but I am concerned how these shingles stand up to real world use. I am deciding between Owens Corning Duration 30 year, GAF Prestique 30 year, GAF Timberline 30 year, and Iko Cambridge East 30 year. We live in Illinois so we see the entire range of weather. We can go from 30 below in the winter to 100 in the summer. We get a lot of rain, hail , sleet, snow, and of course high winds. We have a two story Colonial house, so only the main peak and no valleys. We will install a ridge vent, either Cobra Snow or Air Vent. Also, anyone have an opinion on the Hip and Ridge shingles? All but one of the installer use them, one of them doesn’t like them but will do them. He thinks the higher profile could be a problem with high winds, but does admit it is just his opinion. Thanks for any help!

The Cold Hard Facts And Bottom Line Truth

Over the last 10 years, almost every manufacturer that supplies roofing materials has made incredible leaps forward in the technology and quality of roofing products. At this point in time, we can confidently say that the best choice in shingle comes down to personal preference, budget, and whether you want to keep your money invested in Canada.

Weve been to the tradeshows, seen the tests and have experience with all of the major brands. At the end of the day, when we see an Owens Corning vs. BP shingles review come out at 4.6 to 4.4 we have to ask ourselves Whats the real difference here?

We noticed that GAF and IKO didnt even submit a product in last years trade show.

Weve opened pallets of Owens Corning and found tons of defective shingles.

IKO is still settling lawsuits for products that were deemed defective.

One roofing website claims Atlas is the best and when you research the reviews, the latest reviews are screaming otherwise.

The point is that its difficult to pinpoint an accurate, unbiased review when so many websites differ so widely in opinion. So when you see lists like this that dont even include BP you have to wonder whether youre getting all of the information you need to paint the bigger picture in your research.

Value Comparison What Do You Get For The Money

IKO and Atlas, like all major brands, make two designs.

3-tab shingles, also called strip shingles, are single-layer shingles consisting of an asphalt coated fiberglass mesh core covered in UV-reflecting and water-shedding granules. The lower, exposed edge is cut to give the appearance of three pieces of slate or wood shake/shingle.

Laminated shingles are built with the same type of base, but an additional layer is fused to the top to create a thicker shingle that better mimics stone slate and wood shakes or shingles. These shingles go by many names Dimensional is the most accurate description, but theyre also called Architectural, Designer and Premium shingles. Theyre all the same animal laminated shingles.

Basic Three Tab, 3-Tab or Strip Shingles

Take your pick of names. IKO simply calls them Traditional shingles in some of its marketing. They are generally entry-level shingles or mid-range depending on their construction.

Homeowners choose 3-tab shingles for their affordability. Retail cost begins below $70 per square, as with the Atlas GlassMaster shingles. But most start at about $75 per square, or a very affordable 75 cents per square foot. Installed cost runs around $3.00 to $3.50 per square foot, or $300-$350 per square for basic shingles.

The disadvantage of 3-tab shingles is their thinner, and therefore weaker, construction. High winds are a major threat to blowing them off. So is large hail, which can dent, pit or crack them more easily.
