What Everyone Should Know About The Shingles Vaccine

Shingles vaccination is the only way to protect against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia , the most common complication from shingles.

CDC recommends that adults 50 years and older get two doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix to prevent shingles and the complications from the disease. Adults 19 years and older who have weakened immune systems because of disease or therapy should also get two doses of Shingrix, as they have a higher risk of getting shingles and related complications.

Your doctor or pharmacist can give you Shingrix as a shot in your upper arm.

Shingrix provides strong protection against shingles and PHN. In adults 50 years and older who have healthy immune systems, Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and PHN. Immunity stays strong for at least the first 7 years after vaccination. In adults with weakened immune systems, studies show that Shingrix is 68%-91% effective in preventing shingles, depending on the condition that affects the immune system.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Shingles Immunisation

All medicines and vaccines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time theyre not.

For most people, the chance of having a serious side effect from a vaccine is much lower than the chance of serious harm if you caught the disease.

Talk to your doctor about possible side effects of shingles vaccines, or if you have possible side effects that worry you.

Common side effects of shingles vaccines include:

• pain, redness, swelling or itching where the needle went in

Serious reactions to immunisation are rare. With Zostavax® vaccination, very rarely a generalised chickenpox-like rash may occur around 24 weeks after vaccination. This may be associated with fever and feeling unwell. This rash may be a sign of a serious reaction to the virus in the vaccine. Seek medical attention and inform of recent Zostavax vaccination if you experience this reaction.

Shingles Or Something Else

Small blisters that appear only on the lips or around the mouth may be cold sores, sometimes called fever blisters. Theyre not shingles, but are instead caused by the herpes simplex virus. Itchy blisters that appear after hiking, gardening, or spending time outdoors could be a reaction to poison ivy, oak, or sumac. If you arent sure whats causing your rash, see your healthcare provider.

What Are The Possible Reactions After The Vaccine

The shingles vaccines are very safe. Common reactions to the vaccines include headache as well as soreness, redness and swelling where the vaccine was given. Itching and a rash may also occur after getting Zostavax® II. Other reactions that may occur after getting Shingrix® include fever, muscle soreness, fatigue, shivering, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

It is important to stay in the clinic for 15 minutes after getting any vaccine because there is an extremely rare possibility, less than 1 in a million, of a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This may include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the throat, tongue or lips. Should this reaction occur, your health care provider is prepared to treat it. Emergency treatment includes administration of epinephrine and transfer by ambulance to the nearest emergency department. If symptoms develop after you leave the clinic, call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

It is important to always report serious or unexpected reactions to your health care provider.

How Is Eastern White Cedar Commonly Used

Commonly used for sidewall and occasional roof applications, Eastern White Cedar grows in Eastern Canada, and because of its lighter, more neutral color, it can be stained to nearly any color, with semi-transparent stains. It is an evergreen tree with fan-like branches and scaly leaves. Unlike the closely related species, Western Red Cedar, it is only a small tree.

Eastern White Cedar grows to a height of 1020 metres tall with a 0.4 metres trunk diameter, exceptionally to 30 metres tall and 1.6 metres diameter. Northern White Cedars found to be growing on cliff faces in southern Ontario are the oldest trees in Eastern North America and all of Canada, growing to ages in excess of 1653 years old. As a moderate growth species, Eastern White Cedar can replenish itself in about 35 years, which allows for sustainable forestry activities.

Considerations For Patients Who Previously Received Zostavax

Studies have not examined the safety and immunogenicity of Shingrix administered less than 5 years following Zostavax vaccination. However, there are no data or theoretical concerns to indicate that Shingrix would be less safe or less effective when given at an interval shorter than 5 years following Zostavax. Since the risk of herpes zoster increases with age, providers should weigh a patients risk of herpes zoster with the age-specific protection expected from Zostavax to determine when to vaccinate with Shingrix.

Application Over Existing Siding Or Masonry

Shakes and shingles may be used to cover existing wood beveled siding, masonry, or stucco. Shingles can be applied directly over existing siding, however, a rain screen is necessary when installed over brick, stucco, or foam sheathing. Do not install siding directly onto masonry.

If applied directly over existing siding make sure to use nails long enough to penetrate to the underlying sheathing.

Make sure to pad out existing trim work to allow for the new siding thickness. Re-trimming windows and doors or re-wrapping with aluminum will be necessary.

Many people have the mistaken impression that, like poison ivy, shingles is a nuisance rash that fades on its own. But in fact a shingles rash should alert people, especially in middle or old age, to seek immediate medical help, says Dr. Oaklander.

Rapid treatment with one of three antiviral drugs, acyclovir , valacyclovir , or famciclovir , can shorten a shingles attack and reduce the risk of serious damage, such as:

• Long-term pain. Pain that lingers in the area of a healed shingles rash is called postherpetic neuralgia. This often-disabling pain can last several months to a year.
• Prolonged itching. Many people are left with an itchy area from their shingles, which can be as disabling as chronic pain. It is most common on the head or neck.
• Damage to vision and hearing. Pain and rash near an eye can cause permanent eye damage and requires an urgent ophthalmological exam. When the nerve to the ear is affected, it can permanently damage hearing or balance.
• Strokes and heart attacks. A PLOS Medicinestudy that tracked about 67,000 people ages 65 and older who were newly diagnosed with shingles found that stroke risk more than doubled in the first week after the shingles diagnosis. The same study reported an increased risk for heart attacks in the three months after shingles, but the additional risk dissipated after six months.

Administration With Other Vaccines

CDC general recommendations advise that recombinant and adjuvanted vaccines, such as Shingrix, can be administered concomitantly, at different anatomic sites, with other adult vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines. Concomitant administration of Shingrix with Fluarix Quadrivalent , 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine and Tetanus Toxoid, Reduced Diphtheria Toxoid and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine, Adsorbed , and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has been studied, and there was no evidence for interference in the immune response to either vaccine or safety concerns. Coadministration of Shingrix with adjuvanted influenza vaccine and COVID-19 vaccines is being studied.

Shingrix and pneumococcal vaccine can be administered at the same visit if the person is eligible for both. When both pneumococcal conjugate vaccine PCV13 and PPSV23 are recommended for an adult, PCV13 should always be administered first and can be administered concomitantly with Shingrix.

How Chickenpox And Shingles Are Spread

Chickenpox is spread when an infected person talks, breathes, coughs or sneezes tiny particles containing infectious agents into the air. These are called small particle aerosols. Due to their tiny size, small particle aerosols can travel long distances on air currents and remain suspended in the air for minutes to hours. These small particle aerosols may be breathed in by another person. Chickenpox is also spread by contact with or breathing in blister fluid.

Following infection, the virus will remain dormant in nerve cells near the spinal cord for the rest of the persons life. Reactivation of this virus causes shingles rather than a second attack of chickenpox.

Direct contact with the blister fluid in shingles can cause chickenpox in a non-immune person. There is no spread through the air from people with shingles, except perhaps in some very severe cases of disseminated shingles. Contact with chickenpox or shingles cannot lead to shingles in the exposed person since shingles can only follow the reactivation of a previous chickenpox infection.

curious if anyone has some stories about the longevitiy of different techniques they have used for staining cedar shingles. im currently looking to produce the longest lasting stain job on new grade A white cedar shingles to be installed as siding.

i currently have purchased some high quality 100% latex stain with a latex primer sealer. i plan to dip them and brush the excess off so I get all sides quickly. then, install them and add a second coat of stain to the exterior once installed. the installation is in central vermont and has a harsh winter climate.

Study Says Its Important Patients With Shingles Are Made Aware Of Heart Disease Risk

Contracting shingles, a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, increases a person’s risk of stroke and heart attack, according to a research letter published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime. Anyone who has suffered from chickenpox may develop shingles however, the risk of shingles increases as a person gets older.

Researchers in South Korea used the National Health Insurance Service’s “medical check-up” database to identify patients with newly diagnosed herpes zosteror shingles, stroke and heart attack using the relevant International Classification of Disease-10 diagnostics codes.

A total of 519,880 patients were followed from 2003-2013, during this period there were 23,233 cases of shingles. The final cohort of 23,213 was matched with the same number of shingles-free patients to serve as control subjects.

Patients with shingles were more likely to be female and common risk factors for stroke and heart attack, such as old age, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, were also more commonly seen in these patients. However, this group was also less likely to smoke, have a lower alcohol intake, more exercise and be part of a higher socioeconomic class.

“Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox,” explains Rhoda Chang, MD, a primary care physician with WakeMed Health & Hospitals in Raleigh, N.C.

The varicella-zoster virus gives rise to chickenpox and shingles infections, says the CDC. Usually, shingles develops in people who have had chickenpox earlier in their life, but this is not always the case.

“There have been reported cases of shingles in the younger population who have had the chickenpox vaccine,” says Dr. Chang. “It is possible to get shingles even if you have had the vaccination.”

Some people are at a higher risk for shingles. “People over the age of 50 or people who have a medical issue that compromises the immune system are more likely to get shingles,” says Dr. Chang. “Those who have had recent transplants are at risk as well.”

Ideas For Dipping Cedar Shingles

We are about to start adding siding shingles to our remodeled house and wondered if anyone out there has some ideas on the best way to dip, brush, drain, and dry the shingles before installing them. We are using a Cabot weathering stain on red cedar shingles with just less than 6 inches of exposure, and have already purchased the shingles so buying pre-stained versions is, alas, not an option. Last year we shingled the garage and dryed the shingles on a clothesline with 200 pins each one attached with an 8 inch tang. Made quite a sizeable windchime in a breeze. Also, this Cabot stain is much too pricey to waste so some sort of drip recovery apparatus is a must. Last years effort was a section of valley roof flashing leading back to a five gallon paint bucket, but we didnt have a good rack to hold the shingles while they dripped. Result was more goo than recovery. Creative ideas are welcome here as we have a mountain of shingles to prep for this project. Thanks.
