Tamko has long been producing some great and very cost-effective shingles. While they might not be every roofers favorite shingle, the Tamko Heritage shingles recently caught our eye, so we did a review.

What Makes Our Shingle Test Unique

Our annual Roofing Insights shingle test is our way of putting shingles through the wringer and giving them the closest thing to what life on a roof might be like. We also do our best to understand how well they can be installed and how well theyre going to hold up.

Here are our criteria:

Some roofers might not agree that this test covers everything it should or that all of these tests are legitimate. But were not a high-tech lab with simulators. Were real roofers looking for real reviews and understandings of how well these shingles will hold up as theyre installed.

Note that each category is ranked on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best.

Both companies offer a range of warranties that are comparable with one another and other leading brands. As you research any shingle brand, not just OC and TAMKO, you will find that issues with getting the manufacturer to back its warranty are easily the top criticism, and frustration, that homeowners have regarding shingles.

Installation is a large part of the overall quality of a roofing job. The point is emphasized by frequent warranty issues.

Malarkey And Certainteed Against The World

How do the top-selling lines from these heavyweight brands stack up against the best shingles from OC, GAF, and top manufacturers? While an exhaustive comparison would exhaust us all, heres a brief look at how the CertainTeed Landmark and Malarkey Legacy shingles compare with the best-selling architectural shingles from other leading brands.

Owens Corning Duration The Duration family of shingles covers a lot of territory more like CertainTeed Landmark than Malarkey Legacy. This is how OC has chosen to market this line or rather 8 lines of shingles all under the Duration umbrella.

Four lines offer solar reflective shingles that meet CRRC standards. Two, Flex and Storm, use polymer-enhanced asphalt to achieve a Class 4 impact rating equal to Legacy NEX and Landmark ClimateFlex lines.

Warranties are very comparable including Lifetime warranties on most shingle lines.

The bottom line is that OC gets better ratings on many platforms when compared with CertainTeed and Malarkey.

GAF Timberline HDZ are the closest match from GAF to the Legacy and Landmark lines. GAF claims this is the best-selling shingle in America, and thats probably true.

In short, you get less variety in shingle lines and styles with GAF, but the Timberline HDZ is pretty close in overall quality maybe just a step behind except when it comes to windy conditions.
