Which Shingles Are The Best

What Is An Asphalt Shingle Roof

Shingles: What Are the Causes and Best Treatments?

If you look out at your neighborhood, roughly 80 percent of the roofs you see will be covered in asphalt shingles. These trusted materials are affordable, but theyre also not as complex to install as other roofing materials, which means roofers can complete the project relatively fast. And while it still takes years of training and installation experience to get it right, asphalt shingles are easier to install than other material types.

On the top of the shingle is the protective layer of granules, often made of ceramic. The granules help resist damage caused by impact with fast moving debris from trees or hail.

Asphalt shingles are also bonded together with sealant as they are situated on the rooftop. Its often a thermally-activated chemical at various spots on the shingle. Shingle durability can differ per brand, so make sure you check in with your roofing contractor to ensure theyre using quality products that will last.

Some shingles are made to prevent various types of growth, particularly algae. And while the primary role shingles play is as a protective layer, they are also designed to help control the climate inside the home. For example, instead of soaking in the heat of the sun and distributing it into the home, some shingles are made to reflect ultraviolet light away from the home.

Best Styles Of Asphalt Shingles

Depending on your homes style, the roof may account for as much as 40% of its visual exterior. And with todays trend of creating outdoor living spaces, you could be looking at your roof a lot more often. Your choice of style and color may reflect your personality and individual taste, but its always important to keep your homes resale value in mind. Avoid materials and designs that will make listing your house difficult.

Youll find asphalt roofing shingles in an overwhelming variety of styles and colors. Its important to select a shingle profile that respects and complements the architecture of your home. Some profiles are straight, while others are contoured to mimic the look of random-cut natural stone tiles or hand-hewn wood shakes. Some shingles have a scalloped edge. These co-ordinates well with Victorian-style homes.

Boston Family Puzzled Over Best Buy Tablet Boxes Stuffed With Roofing Shingles

A Boston family is left with many questions after an item bought at a local Best Buy leads to a disappointing Christmas present.

The Websters told Boston 25 News that the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 box purchased at the South Bay location was stuffed with roofing shingles.

They made that puzzling discovery while the family was opening presents on the day after Christmas.

The item was out of stock when they went to return it.

They were sent to Best Buy at the Square One Mall in Saugus where the plot thickened.

They asked to open it in the store. When they opened the new one in the store, that one was also shingles, said Michael Webster, whose brother bought the item.

Michael Websters brother purchased the tablet for his wife.

The couple couldnt believe it when they discovered the same item had been tampered with at another location.

Im curious to see how many other Microsoft tablets are out there switched out with shingles, said Webster. Theres no way there was just two, and we happened to get both of them.

Websters brother and sister-in-law are now waiting for the item to be delivered from out of state.

A Best Buy spokesperson sent the following statement to Boston 25 News:

This is obviously not the experience we want any of our customers to have and we appreciate their patience while we worked to replace their tablet. Were looking into what happened and how we can prevent it from happening in the future.

How To Choose The Best Roofing Shingles

8 best Shingles images on Pinterest

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing shingles for your roofing project. Most likely, your budget is one of the largest factors. Accordingly, you want the best price on roofing shingles as well as the best value.

Typically, it can cost from $5,000 to $28,000 to replace a residential roof. Factors such as the square footage, your choice of shingle and local labor costs all influence the total price of installation.

For example, the average American home is around 2,000 square feet. Imagine that you have a 2,000 square-foot home. In that case, a new roof may cost between $7,700 and $60,500, including labor.

Across the United States, the cost to install a roof varies. On average, however, a new roof costs about seven dollars per square foot. This price usually includes all the various services involved in the installation, such as

  • Construction waste disposal
  • Two layers of old roof removal

If you have special requirements, this will also affect the price of your roofing installation. The complexity of your roof will also contribute to the cost of the project.

The underlayment will also affect the cost of your roof. Also, the slope of your roof plays into how much it will cost to have your new roof installed.

Factors That Make A Roof Susceptible To Wind Damage

Several key factors make a roof susceptible to wind damage. If you identify with any of these factors, installing impact resistant shingles may be a good choice for you.

Factor No. 1 Local Weather

The most obvious factor is the weather you experience in your region. If you live in a location thats prone to high winds, hurricanes, storms, or tornadoes, youre likely to experience wind-related damage with regular shingles.

Constant exposure to high winds can also weaken shingle bonds, meaning that even if your roof survives a storm, it can cause issues in the long run.

Did you know? Florida experiences more hurricanes and tropical storms than any other state. The Florida Keys, Southeast Florida, and the Florida Panhandle are all particularly vulnerable due to the states coastal location. Other vulnerable areas include the Central Gulf Coast and much of south and central Texas.

Factor No. 2 Installation Errors

A contractor who installs your roof shingles incorrectly leaves them vulnerable to wind damage.

For example: Misplaced nails could create gaps for wind to enter and poor sealing can lead to wind, water, and debris getting into gaps, causing long-term damage.

Factor No. 3 Roof Shape

Your roofs shape affects its aerodynamic properties.

Generally speaking, high-pitched gable roofs are more prone to damage because they are inefficient at directing wind away.

Factor No. 4 Age

What Factors Impact How Long Your Roof Lasts

Ice, snow, hail, rain, UV light, organic growth and wind arent the only factors that impact how long your roof lasts. You also have to take into effect the craftsmanship behind the installation of the shingles and other roofing components. The following are all important factors that will impact its longevity.

Quality of the installation workmanship

Roofers must be backed by years of experience. Only choose a contractor that has a full-time team of experts capable of tackling any situation.

Environmental conditions

The best roofers know which materials to use based on the environmental conditions of the areas they do their work. They will choose materials that are built to withstand such things as extreme temperatures, high winds and potential algae growth.

The quality of materials used

If you opt for bargain basement roofing materials, expect to get bargain basement results. The shingles built by the best manufacturers will last up to 30 years or more.

The type of roofing material used

From using the right roofing nails to installing the right materials to prevent ice dams, there are a number of areas that can be negatively impacted when the contractor doesnt know which materials to use.

At VIS Exterior, we have many years of experience roofing homes and we have amassed a knowledge base that ensures our customers will not have to undergo a roofing project for at least a couple of decades. Were focused on applying our expertise so your roof lasts a long, long time.

Climate And Asphalt Shingle Ratings

Certain asphalt shingles perform better in specific climates. Most asphalt shingle manufacturers offer cool, more reflective shingles for higher reflectivity reducing temperatures in your attic and helping save on air-conditioning costs.

Additionally, shingle manufacturers make impact resistant shingles, designed to withstand hail, called Class 4 shingles. Class 4 shingles are tested using a steel ball to simulate resistance up to 2 hailstones. Class 4 impact resistant shingles are popular in hail-prone regions, and in some markets like Fort Collins, these shingles are required for all new installations and roof replacements.

Different asphalt shingles have higher wind resistance ratings for improved performance in high-wind regions.

Many Colorado markets require a minimum 110-mile-per-hour wind resistance rating for wind uplift. The most basic 3-tab shingles do not meet this minimum requirement and cannot be installed during a roof replacement.

New treatment for the pain of shingles

There is no evidence that drinking alcohol affects prednisone’s effectiveness. Increased risk of adverse effects is the biggest worry when combining alcohol with prednisone. Many variables, including the amount of alcohol consumed and a person’s history of alcohol misuse, addiction, or use disorder, influence the result of combining prednisone and alcohol.

Oc Vs Gaf: Energy Efficiency

As more and more homeowners are leaning towards finding more sustainable, green options for their homes, shingle manufacturers have had to innovate. Both brands have taken steps to improve energy efficiency with their shingles in different ways.

GAF has crafted its Timberline Cool Series shingles to reflect heat without having to be light in color. In the past, only white roofs would have such reflective capacity, but their specially designed granules were designed to reflect more light which reduces the transfer of heat to the space below, thus preventing the home from heating up from the sun. They come in medium to dark hues, and having a dark roof with the same, if not more, reflectivity as other cooling shingles is an incredible benefit.

On the other hand, Owens Corning has their Cool Roof Collection featuring two asphalt shingles produced to deflect heat from your home: The TruDefinition Duration Cool and the OC TruDefinition Premium Cool Shingles. Every shingle in the Cool Roof Collection features innovative solar-reflecting granules to comply with the Solar Reflectance Index requirements.

When it comes to energy efficiency, these brands are in even tow. So it really comes down to style preference and cost. For the most affordable options, homeowners could choose either the Timberline HDZ Reflector Series or Owens Corning Duration Cool.

What Are Dimensional Shingles

Also known as architectural shingles or laminate shingles, this is the most common asphalt shingle. During manufacturing, they are given two or more layers to create a thicker, multi-dimensional appearance to the final roof. They can be designed to replicate natural slate or wood shake aesthetics so could potentially boost the curb appeal to your home. One disadvantage of dimensional shingles is that they are heavier than 3-tab shingles, so they add more weight to your roof. However, they tend to be more durable due to their double layers.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association reports that dimensional asphalt shingles are the most popular asphalt shingle used today. Fine Home Building Magazine Issue 214reports that dimensional asphalt shingles accounted for nearly three-quarters of all asphalt roofing sales in 2010. Everything points to that trend continuing through 2017.

You can expect most dimensional shingle roofs to come with a 30-year manufacturer warranty. When installed properly, you can expect your dimensional shingle roof to last 25-28 years. They tend to cost about 20 percent more than 3-tab shingles at about $3-$5 per square foot installed.
