Shingles Symptoms: Help Prevent The Pain With A Single Shot

Shingles symptoms may start with tingling pain and end up as painful blisters getting a vaccine may help protect you from this serious illness.

The era when chickenpox was a childhood rite of passage seems far behind us. Before the chickenpox vaccine, millions of Americans got the infection each year, and thousands had serious complications. Chickenpox is now a relatively rare occurrencebut the varicella zoster virus that causes it is still in our midst. Today, the virus more often causes shingles symptoms, which still carry serious health risks.

The chickenpox vaccine became available in 1995, which means that most US adults had chickenpox as children. Once you’ve had chickenpox, the varicella zoster virus remains in your body, even after you’ve recovered. In some cases, it can get reactivated later in life, causing an illness called shingles.

Fortunately, you can lower your risk of developing this illness with a one-dose vaccine called Zostavax.

Stop in for the vaccine as soon as possible if you’re in the recommended age bracket. Avoiding this painful infection is well worth finding time for a quick shot in your arm.

Am I Really at Risk?

Anyone who has had chickenpox in the past is at risk of developing shingles. In fact, according to the CDC, about one-third of US adults aged 60 or older will develop the condition at some point. By age 80, half of us will develop the illness.

What Is The Shingles Vaccine

Does Rite Aid Give Shots

The shingles vaccine prevents herpes zoster, otherwise known as shingles. Shingles is a condition that causes a painful, blistering rash on one side of the face or body. This rash usually appears in a limited area on the skin, sometimes in the form of a stripe or patch. In many cases, the rash shows up after strange sensations, such as tingling or itching, have occurred in the same area. The rash turns into blisters and can be intensely painful. Shingles can also cause:

The most common complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia, the lingering nerve pain after the rash goes away . It can be long-lasting and debilitating. Other complications can occur, depending on which part of your body shingles affects. Complications can include:

  • Brain inflammation

  • Vision changes or blindness

The vaccine is not intended to treat shingles or its complications, only to prevent them. It is given as an injection into the upper arm muscle in two doses that are spaced 2 to 6 months apart.

What Are The Symptoms Of Shingles

Shingles is a painful rash that develops on one side of the face or body. The rash forms blisters that typically scab over in 7-10 days. Shingles typically takes 2-4 weeks to clear up.

People often feel pain, itching, or tingling in the area 1-5 days before the rash appears.

Most commonly, shingles forms a single stripe of rash on either the left or right hemisphere of the body. Occasionally, the rash occurs on one side of the face. Less commonly, the rash looks similar to chickenpox and is spread more liberally . Shingles can sometimes affect the eyes and cause loss of vision.

Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills and upset stomach.

Rite Aid Provides Shingles Vaccine

CAMP HILL, Pa., March 29 — Officials at the U.S. drug store chain Rite Aid say more than 2,100 of the chain’s 4,700 stores will vaccinate patients age 50 and older against shingles.

Robert Thompson, executive vice president of pharmacy for Rite Aid, says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week expanded the age eligibility for the shingles vaccine — Zostavax — which previously was only approved for patients age of 60 and older.

“The new FDA recommendation means that Rite Aid pharmacists can now help a much wider range of patients protect themselves from this painful nerve disease,” Thompson says in a statement. “The vaccine can often be administered to walk-in patients, making it an easy decision to get vaccinated against shingles.”

Patients who want to see which Rite Aid drug stores are offering the vaccine can enter their Zip code at www.riteaid.com/shingles to find the most convenient location, Thompson says.

“Patients should call first to see if appointments are necessary and for the cost, which varies by insurance coverage,” Thompson says.

Many health insurance plans including Medicare Part D cover the cost of the vaccine and a Rite Aid pharmacist can help patients determine the amount of coverage their plan provides, Thompson says.

The varicella-zoster virus, which typically causes chickenpox when patients are first exposed, can cause shingles later in life, leaving some in pain for months or even years.

Is It Safe To Get Vaccinated At A Drug Store

Drug stores are an excellent place to be vaccinated, Schaffner says.

Today, pharmacists are well-trained in vaccines and their indications, as well as safety protocols and inoculation technique, he explains.

In the era of COVID-19, pharmacies are also taking extra safety precautions: People coming in to be vaccinated are required to answer COVID-19 screening questions, wear masks, and maintain physical distancing at immunization sites, while pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and nurse practitioners administering vaccines must wear masks and gloves.

What Is The Shingrix Vaccine

Shingrix is the U.S. Food and Drug Administrationapproved vaccine aimed to prevent shingles infection in individuals older than 50 years and adults aged 18 years and older who are or who will be at increased risk of shingles due to a disease or therapy that can compromise the immunity.

The Herpes Zoster virus is the same virus that causes chickenpox in children. The virus may remain dormant in the persons nerve roots and become active when the immunity wanes .

The reactivated virus causes shingles or Herpes Zoster, a painful condition characterized by painful red blisters over the body, rash, and/or fever.

  • A particular complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia , which persists for months after the infection subsides.
  • It is characterized by extreme pain at the former site of rash and lesions.
  • This pain may or may not respond to strong medications hence, a vaccine against shingles is required.

The Shingrix vaccine works by exposing the body to small doses of the inactive herpes virus. This stimulates the bodys immune system and helps the body to develop an immunity to herpes zoster or shingles.

Does Medicare Cover The Shingles Vaccine

Some facing confusion over vaccine appointments at Rite Aid

En español | Unlike some common vaccines, like those for the flu, hepatitis B and pneumonia, shingles shots are not covered under Medicare Part B, the component of original Medicare that includes doctor visits and outpatient services. Part A, which deals with hospital costs, doesnt cover shingles shots either.

Medicare coverage for Shingrix and Zostavax, the two commercially available shingles vaccines, is provided only if you are enrolled in a stand-alone Part D drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes Part D drug coverage.

Medicare requires Part D plans to cover the shingles vaccine, so if youre enrolled in Part D, you shouldnt have difficulty obtaining the shot. Most require a copayment, which can vary widely from plan to plan.

And if you havent yet met your plans deductible for the year, youll likely pay the full price. For Shingrix, the newer vaccine, that averages around $190, according to GoodRx, a website and app that tracks prescription prices.

What If I Can’t Get Both Doses Of Shingrix Within 2 To 6 Months

Many health care providers prioritize patients who’ve already had the first dose over those who have yet to get their first one.

GlaxoSmithKline reports that most people are completing the two-dose series on time, and is advising patients to:

  • Be patient, but persistent doses are consistently becoming available
  • Ask your provider to add you to a waiting list and contact you when the vaccine is available
  • When receiving your first dose, plan ahead by scheduling your second dose.

Sims said his practice has a system in place to prevent people from missing the second dose within the recommended 2- to 6-month window.

“The way we run it, we set aside two doses whenever we give it to somebody, so they wont not get the second,” he said. But not all practices work that way.

“If youre late, you still get the second one, just get it as soon as you can,” he said. “The longer time between doses, we dont know if thatll make a difference. It probably wont. You just need that boost. It’s just that they studied what happens when people get it in the pair, and didnt study what happens if you get the second dose a year or two later. Historically, with other vaccines, thats what we do. We just give the next dose.”

Rite Aid Launching National Shingles Vaccination And Education Campaign

Rite Aid, the U.S. consumer pharmacy chain, said it is launching a national shingles vaccination and education campaign against the painful nerve disease that strikes 1 million adult Americans annually half of them over the age of 60. The disease and long-term pain that may result can leave victims bed-ridden for weeks, months or even years. Rite Aid said it is offering the shingles vaccine at more than 1,200 Rite Aid pharmacies in 31 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, and that nearly all insurance plans including Medicare Part D will cover at least some of the cost, which varies by insurance coverage. Rite Aid noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended the ZOSTAVAX vaccine as the only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles, which is caused by viral remnants of chickenpox that lay dormant in spinal fluid for decades and can flair up later in life causing long-term pain and inflammation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says:

About a million new cases of shingles are diagnosed each year in the United States.

Anyone who has had chicken pox can get shingles. That means 95 percent of adults are at risk.

Approximately one-third of the U.S. population will get shingles. The risk rises after 50 years of age. Half of people living to age 85 have had or will get shingles.

Among those who get shingles, more than one-third will develop serious complications. The risk of complications rises after 60 years of age.

Prompt treatment is essential to control acute symptoms.

A vaccine can lower the risk of getting shingles, a vaccine that was recommended in October 2006 by the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. It is among the adult immunizations that are recommended, once, for people age 60 and older.

So, where can you get the shot?

Rite Aid is part of a national shingles vaccination and education campaign, and more than 1,200 of its pharmacies will offer the vaccine. At least two Rite Aids stores in Central New York are participating. They are 1820 Tealle Avenue in Syracuse and 110 East Broadway in Fulton.

“Nearly all insurance plans, including Medicare Part D will cover at least some of the cost, which varies by insurance coverage,” says a news release.
