All 8 studies examined HZ as an outcome, with 3 reporting AEs. Risk of HZ was lower in patients who received HZV compared with controls however, heterogeneity was high . There was no significant difference in AEs associated with HZV . The authors concluded that HZV compared with control significantly lowered the risk of HZ without an increase in AEs in CKD patients however, significant heterogeneity was present. Moreover, these researchers stated that HZV should be actively considered in CKD patients because the prevalence of HZ is higher in this population.

Very common adverse events occur in 10% or more of vaccinees. Common adverse events occur in 1% to less than 10% of vaccinees.
Injection site reactions are very commonly reported for both LZV and RZV. For LZV recipients the frequency is slightly higher in adults aged < 60 years. For all ages, the majority of these events were rated mild or moderate in intensity and lasted less than 2 days.
