Slate Roof Shingles

Authentic slate shingles have been the roofing material of choice for centuries throughout Europe and the United States for estate homes, libraries and cathedrals. The beauty of authentic slate comes at a high cost, however, in terms of production, installation and durability: It’s expensive to quarry, heavy to lift for transport and installation, fragile to cut and nail, and cracks easily once installed.

Synthetic slate shingles are a modern improvement on a construction classic. Made from combinations of plastic and rubber, synthetic slate is designed to mirror the beauty and uniqueness of authentic slate without the expense or installation headaches. And synthetic slate shingles last longer.

They’re made by injection-molding petroleum-based materials into metal forms that are cast from authentic slate. Some brands of synthetic slate shingles are manufactured with virgin rubber or plastic, while other products incorporate recycled rubber or plastic, mineral dust or cellulose fibers. Recycled content usually consists of high-quality post-industrial materials only a few incorporate post-consumer recycled materials.

Best Synthetic Slate Roofing On The Market

Looking for some feedback on what the BEST synthetic slate roofing product is on the market? If you’re an owner, installer, contractor, sales rep of synthetic roofing please vote and use the comments to clarify why one of these products stands out from the rest.

Seems like there is very little comparison of the different products on the market. Yet there are many out there, and they come in a wide variety of materials , and meeting various fire, impact and wind ratings. What i’m most curious about is aesthetics and costs to be honest. So please give your feedback, much appreciated. Thanks!

PS. I’m planning to put one of these products on my new construction Victorian in the coming weeks. Its a 3 story with mansard roof which I’ve specified Iron Gray Hardiplank siding, White Azek Trim, Black framed Signature Series Weathershield windows, and Mahogany front door. Trying to get my hands on samples to see what looks the most realistic, while contemplating which color scheme would go best. I’m thinking a nice slate gray or castle gray would go really well. Cheers

Costs Of Slate Roofs Per Square

Roofing tiles are often sold per square, with prices ranging between $150 and $3,000 per square. Each square has a surface area of 100 square feet. The overall cost of the job varies according to the size of your roof and the slate type you choose. The price of synthetic slate shingles ranges from $150 to $1,200 per square.

Slate shingles made of natural slate cost between $1,000 and $3,000 per square foot. The bigger the roof, the more expensive it will be.

    Slate Roofing Vs Asphalt Shingles

    EcoStar Installation

Natural stone is the ultimate eco-friendly, durable, and beautiful roofing material. Unfortunately, high cost and weight concerns make slate a rare sight on run-of-the-mill homes. You will most often see a slate roof on churches, libraries, and government and university buildings.

Slate tiles will not saturate with water, and offer a completely fireproof option for your roof. Since slate roofing is made of stone, it is impervious to weather, sun, heat, and cold so you can expect a slate roof to last up to 150+ years.

On the other hand, asphalt shingles , lasts only 15 to 30 years. However, it is much more affordable than a high-end slate tile roof.

While they may seem to be identical from a distance, these three varieties vary in terms of materials, longevity, advantages, disadvantages, and cost.

Synthetic Shake And Shingle Pricing Guide For 2022

Composite slate roofing materials are manufactured on-demand using a combination of plastic and polymers or plastic and rubber. They cost between $4 and $8 per square foot on average. Rubber-based tiles are more flexible than other synthetic shingles and must be installed carefully to prevent breaking.

Cost Of Replacing Slate Shingles With Synthetic Slate Shingles

    Greenwich, CT Synthetic Slate

This is where it gets a bit nerve-wracking and is not for the squeamish. The average roof in the United States is about 1,600 square feet. Each square of synthetic slate shingle can run in the neighborhood of $350-400 per square. Yes, per square.

That means that after installation costsyou are looking at $900-$1,100 PER SQUARE. Incredibly, that pales in comparison to the $1,650-$3,000 per square cost of authentic slate tiles. When all is said and done, youre looking at $14,400-17,600 for a synthetic slate shingle roof and around $26,000 for a natural slate roof of the same size.

The costs are going to be there regardless, but you are still saving anywhere from $9,000-12,000 on synthetic versus natural slate. Coupled with the durability, lightweight, and ease of installation, it is clear why so many are moving away from natural slate roofs.

Testimonials From The Slate Roofers Contractor Association

    • Our general observations revealed some discolored or faded products. Others curled without cracking but opened enough to allow water into buildings. In general, most fiber-cement materials quickly became unfit for roofing or became so unattractive owners were unhappy with the appearance.
    • The relentless marketing by the manufacturers, with claims of 50-75 year lifespans, less weight, colors and designer patterns, and ease of installation coupled with the consumers lack of understanding of natural slate roofs for the most part has left us as traditional roofers little choice but to install these or starve.
    • Many of the fake slate manufacturers have gone out of business, but new ones keep popping up . It doesnt make sense to me to go with an untested product when one that is tried and proven and about the same cost is available.

What Are Synthetic Slate Shingles Made Of

    Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles

Synthetic slate shingles are a relatively new roofing material that is made from a mixture of fiberglass, hemp fibers, post industrial plastic, recycled paper products, polymers, and a number of others, depending on the specific blend that a manufacturer uses.

These synthetic shingles are known as composite shingles not to be confused with composition shingles, which are really asphalt shingles.

As the name composite implies, each composite roofing product can actually be made from very different materials, which will then impact its durability, longevity and weather resistance.

When you research composite slate shingles its very important to check out the actual composition of each product, to ensure you are getting a top quality roof.

Asphalt shingles are the least expensive sort of man-made stone available. These shingles, which are made of a viscous, black combination of hydrocarbons, have a slate-like look. Apart from the variety of stylistic options, they are also simple to install, which makes them an appealing alternative for many consumers. They are water-resistant due to their laminate construction.

Asphalt slate shingles typically cost between $1.50 and $4 per square foot.
