A new shingles vaccine is now available in pharmacies and from physicians.

The new shingles vaccine recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for people 50 and older is now widely available in pharmacies and with physicians.

Testing found that Shingrix, which received Food and Drug Administration approval last fall, was 97 percent effective in adults 50 to 69 and 91 percent effective in those 70 and older. Those are far better results than provided by the previous vaccine, Zostavax, which was recommended for people 60 and up.

CVS announced this week that Shingrix is available in its stores nationwide, making it the latest of major chain pharmacies including Walgreens, Duane Reed, Walmart and Albertsons to have it. It has been available to doctors since late November, but patients should check with their own physicians to determine whether they can get the shots there.

Shingrix is taken in two doses separated by two to six months. Zostavax, the previously recommended vaccine, was a one-shot dose. The CDC says even those who have received a Zostavax shot should get the new drug, as should those who have had shingles.

A Closer Look At The Safety Data

Both Shingrix and Zostavax shingles vaccines have been shown to be safe and well tolerated. Common side effects, such as soreness and redness at the injection site, are usually mild to moderate in intensity and resolve quickly on their own.

Shingrix

In 8 clinical trials of more than 10,000 participants:

• Grade 3 reactions were common after patients received Shingrix.
• About 1 out of 10 adults who received Shingrix reported grade 3 injection-site symptoms such as pain, redness, and swelling.
• About 1 out of 10 reported grade 3 systemic reactions such as myalgia , fatigue , headache, shivering, fever, and gastrointestinal illness.
• Most people who got Shingrix reported at least some pain at the injection site.

Zostavax

What The Cdc Says

The CDC recommends healthy adults 50 and older get the new Shingrix vaccine. The agency says even people have received Zostavax should get it. The CDC also recommends it for anyone who has had chickenpox or shingles in the past.

The agency warns that some people should not get Shingrix vaccinations. These include people who may be allergic to the vaccine or any of its components. People who test negative for the chickenpox virus should not get Shingrix. They should choose the chickenpox vaccine instead. People who currently have shingles should not get the vaccine. And the CDC recommends women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should wait to get it.

Shingrix side effects reported in clinical trials were minor. One in six people reported side effects that affected their regular activities. The CDC said the effects went away in two to three days. The most common side effect was a sore arm with mild to moderate pain. Other people reported tiredness, headache and some flu-like symptoms. Most side effects were in younger patients.

The CDC said patients could treat most side effects with over-the-counter drugs. The results came from a clinical trial of 15,000 patients given Shingrix on four continents.

Should you get the first dose if youre not sure you can get the second?

There are no clinical studies showing how effective one dose of Shingrix is, but specialists I spoke with agree it probably provides at least some protection.

CVS tells its pharmacists to prioritize patients who need the second shot, says spokeswoman Amy Lanctot in an email. So if your pharmacy offers to put your name on a list of people waiting for the second dose, that could help.

Medicare beneficiaries who are able to get their hands on a dose of the new shingles vaccine, which has been in short supply, may pay more than they expect.

When Stanley Isenberg learned there was a new shingles vaccine, he set out to find it.

Having seen how his father suffered with the painful, blistered rash of shingles, he wanted to avoid that fate at all costs.

Isenberg, a 94-year-old World War II veteran, was prepared to pay. But he was still shocked by the price the pharmacist quoted for the first in the two-shot series: $167.

I said, Wow! Isenberg recalled.

The pharmacist shrugged. Isenberg chewed on the number, thought about his father, then rolled up his sleeve and replied, Lets go.

Shingrix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, has been in such high demand since it was released last year that many pharmacies have had a hard time keeping it in stock. But if youre lucky enough to track it down and you are covered by Medicare, be prepared to pay dearly.

Under the Affordable Care Act, most private insurance plans are required to cover the vaccine with no copay or coinsurance when administered by an in-network provider.

The prices are all over the map, said Sue Greeno, a Medicare advocate with the Center for Medicare Advocacy in Washington. I strongly advise people if theyre considering this to check with their plan if its on their covered list of drugs.
