Cvs Sign Up For Shingles Shot

What Are The Side Effects

CVS Now Accepting COVID-19 Vaccine Appointments

Because the vaccine helps your body create a strong defense against shingles, you are likely to have temporary side effects from getting the shots. You may experience side effects after either dose or after both doses, which may include:

  • Redness, soreness, swelling at the site of the vaccination.
  • Tiredness, muscle pain, headache, shivering, fever, stomach pain or nausea.

About one out of six people who got Shingrix experienced side effects that prevented them from doing regular activities. Symptoms usually went away on their own in about two to three days.3

Who Should Get The Flu Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get a flu vaccine every year. People who are at a higher risk of complications from the flu are even more strongly urged to get a vaccine. This includes those 65 and over, pregnant women, children under 5, and people with certain chronic conditions like asthma.

If youre allergic to eggs, have had Guillain-Barré syndrome in the past, or are presently sick, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before getting vaccinated. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare type of autoimmune-related paralysis that can be triggered by infections.

At MinuteClinic, the rules are a little different than at CVS Pharmacy. First, MinuteClinic doesnt offer COVID-19 vaccines. Many clinics still accept walk-ins, but some require appointments during the pandemic.

Lastly, unlike CVS Pharmacy, where pharmacists give shots, MinuteClinic is staffed by medical providers. That means a nurse practitioner or physician assistant will deliver your immunization instead of a pharmacist.

MinuteClinic accepts most insurance plans and lists its prices on its website. The prices represent the fee for a vaccine only. If you end up discussing other healthcare concerns during your vaccine appointment, you also may be charged for a separate medical visit.

Seasonal Flu Coverage And Benefits

CVS editorial stock image. Image of shots, self, drugs

One of the most important steps you can take to protect your health and well-being is to get an annual flu shot. Each year thousands of people are hospitalized because of complications from the flu. Thats why we encourage all our members to get their yearly flu vaccination.

Most Independence Blue Cross members with prescription drug coverage will pay $0 for a flu shot at an in-network pharmacy or provider.¹ Members will not need a referral, precertification, or preapproval to get their seasonal flu vaccine.

Whether in or outside of our service area, members should be able to receive a flu shot from in-network providers without having to pay upfront or submit a form for reimbursement.

Please note: For members who have 100 percent coverage for services in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, no cost-share should be applied for the vaccine and administration of the vaccine when it is administered by an in-network provider.

Coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable benefit plan. Individual benefits must be verified.

Faq: What The Vaccine Shortage Means For You

First of all, dont panic. Shingles shouldnt be taken lightly, but your overall odds of developing it before the shortage ends are low.

Because older people are at higher risk for shingles, MGH’s Dr. Oaklander suggests that younger, healthier people might consider waiting a few more months to get vaccinated, giving older and sicker people precedence.

Should you bother trying to get the vaccine?

According to the literature and the CDC, and if you’re not allergic, yes. If youre at least 50 or have a compromised immune system, you should consider getting the vaccine. In a statement, the CDC recommends using the Vaccine Finder or calling local pharmacies to see which stores have it in stock. The agency also recommends putting your name on a wait-list if your pharmacy has one.

Should you get the first dose if youre not sure you can get the second?

There are no clinical studies showing how effective one dose of Shingrix is, but specialists I spoke with agree it probably provides at least some protection.

CVS tells its pharmacists to prioritize patients who need the second shot, says spokeswoman Amy Lanctot in an email. So if your pharmacy offers to put your name on a list of people waiting for the second dose, that could help.

Should you get Zostavax, the old shingles vaccine?

Any final advice?

It may help to keep in mind that the shortage is a testament to the vaccines success.

When Should I See A Doctor Because Of The Side Effects I Experience From Shingrix

CVS allows some to sign up early for vaccines appointments

Shingrix causes a strong response in your immune system, so it may produce short-term side effects. These side effects can be uncomfortable, but they are expected and usually go away on their own in 2 or 3 days. You may choose to take over-the-counter pain medicine such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Contact your healthcare provider if the symptoms are not improving or if they are getting worse.

In clinical trials, Shingrix was not associated with serious adverse events. In fact, serious side effects from vaccines are extremely rare. For example, for every 1 million doses of a vaccine given, only one or two people might have a severe allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction happen within minutes or hours after vaccination and include hives, swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or weakness. If you experience these or any other life-threatening symptoms, see a doctor right away.

Shingrix Far More Effective Than Previous Shingles Vaccine

Shingrix was 97 percent effective overall in clinical trials at reducing shingles cases. The older Zostavax vaccine reduced overall shingles incidence by 51 percent.

The shots are less effective as people age. But Shingrix still showed an improvement over the older vaccine. Shingrix was almost 90 percent effective for people 70 and older. Zostavax track record has been 67 percent for people 60 and older.

People receive Shingrix in two shots. They should get the second one between two and six months after the first. People who have had the older Zostavax shingles vaccine should wait at least eight weeks before getting a Shingrix shot.

What Everyone Should Know About The Shingles Vaccine

Shingles vaccination is the only way to protect against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia , the most common complication from shingles.

CDC recommends that adults 50 years and older get two doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix to prevent shingles and the complications from the disease. Adults 19 years and older who have weakened immune systems because of disease or therapy should also get two doses of Shingrix, as they have a higher risk of getting shingles and related complications.

Your doctor or pharmacist can give you Shingrix as a shot in your upper arm.

Shingrix provides strong protection against shingles and PHN. In adults 50 years and older who have healthy immune systems, Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and PHN. Immunity stays strong for at least the first 7 years after vaccination. In adults with weakened immune systems, studies show that Shingrix is 68%-91% effective in preventing shingles, depending on the condition that affects the immune system.

Why More Americans Are Skipping The Flu Shot And What Theyre Doing Instead

Here are some of the top reasons adults gave for not getting vaccinated this season:

  • 41% think flu shots dont work very well
  • 39% are concerned aboutthe vaccines side effects
  • 28% saythey never get the flu
  • 24% are concerned about getting the flu from the shot
  • 20% do not think influenza is a serious illness

With Covid, people have forgotten about influenza. This is another serious winter respiratory virus, it can do bad damage to you, William Schaffner, medical director of NFID, said at the conference. The key to prevention is vaccination.

The altered approach this flu season may be partly due to the timing of the omicron-specific booster and peoples concerns with getting both the updated Covid booster and the flu shot. Just 32% of U.S. adults are very confident that it is safe to receive the vaccines at the same time, the survey shows.

The CDC affirms that doing so has proven to be safe. Studies of over 450,000 people indicate that only mild symptoms are experienced after receiving the immunizations simultaneously, says Walensky, adding that, Most of those are resolved really quite quickly.

Meanwhile, choosing to get one vaccination over the other is not a wise decision, Walensky warns. Its useful to increase your bodys defenses against both viruses.

And, she reiterates, bundling them together is easy as well as safe: You want to make sure you get both, and its often more convenient to get them both at the same time.

Who Should Not Get Shingrix

You should not get Shingrix if you:

  • Have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or after a dose of Shingrix.
  • Currently have shingles.
  • Currently are pregnant. Women who are pregnant should wait to get Shingrix.

If you have a minor illness, such as a cold, you may get Shingrix. But if you have a moderate or severe illness, with or without fever, you should usually wait until you recover before getting the vaccine.
