Who Should Not Get Shingrix

You should not get Shingrix if you:

• Have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or after a dose of Shingrix.
• Currently have shingles.
• Currently are pregnant. Women who are pregnant should wait to get Shingrix.

If you have a minor illness, such as a cold, you may get Shingrix. But if you have a moderate or severe illness, with or without fever, you should usually wait until you recover before getting the vaccine.

How Much Is A Shingles Shot Under Medicare Part D

The good news is that the cost of a shingles vaccine, which comes in two timed doses, is subject to change in 2023.

Starting in 2023, the Inflation Reduction Act will eliminate all out-of-pocket costs for vaccines that the CDCs Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends for adults. That includes the shingles vaccine.

However, in 2022 you may be charged a copayment for the shingles vaccine. This varies from plan to plan. The average Part D copayment for vaccines was $47 in 2020, according to Avalere Health, a health care consulting firm.

If you havent yet met your plans annual Part D deductible, which can be up to $480 in 2022, you may have to pay more for the shot. Shingrix, a vaccine the Food and Drug Administration approved in 2017, runs around $212 per dose.

It replaced Zostavax in November 2020. But even if you received Zostavax before it was retired, the CDC recommends getting inoculated with Shingrix: two doses for adults 50 and older spaced two to six months apart.

Know The Benefits And The Side Effects

Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and long-term nerve pain. You may experience some short-term side effects because Shingrix causes a strong response in your immune system.

After getting Shingrix:

How Much Does The Shingles Shot Cost

For now, the cost of the shot can depend on your Medicare plan, the vaccine type and where you get it. Most require a copayment, which can vary widely from plan to plan. If you havent met your plans deductible for the year, you may have to pay full price.

Starting in 2023, the shingles vaccine will be 100% covered for those who have prescription drug coverage as part of a Medicare Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug benefits.

If you are eligible for a free vaccination, you must get it from your family doctor. Pharmacies are not funded to provide free shingles vaccinations.

Ask your vaccinator if you are eligible for any other vaccinations at the same time. Shingrix can be safely given at the same time as most other vaccines.

If you are not enrolled with a doctor

Some medical centres offer casual doctor and nurse appointments at a cost for unenrolled patients. There will not be a cost for the shingles vaccine if you are eligible for a free vaccination, but there may be an administration fee.

If you have already had shingles or received the Zostavax vaccine

You may be offered the Shingrix vaccine if you have already had shingles or received the Zostavax vaccine. We recommend you wait 12 months after a shingles infection or Zostavax vaccination before getting Shingrix. Talk to your family doctor for advice.

The shingles vaccine is available to adults age 50 years and older. This vaccine is covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan only for those aged 65-70 years old. For other age groups, there is a cost which may be covered by your insurance benefit plan.

Shingles or herpes zoster is caused by the virus that causes chickenpox. Once a person has had chickenpox, the virus stays in the nerve cells of the body. The virus may be there for many years and not cause any problems. Sometimes, for unknown reasons, it becomes active again and causes shingles. Shingles causes a painful, blistering skin rash.

Not everyone who has had chickenpox will develop shingles it occurs most frequently in adults over age 50 and in people with a weakened immune system. Zostavax is available from your health care provider or you can book into one of our immunization clinics held twice a month. Only 1 dose is needed for protection.

When Should I See A Doctor Because Of The Side Effects I Experience From Shingrix

Shingrix causes a strong response in your immune system, so it may produce short-term side effects. These side effects can be uncomfortable, but they are expected and usually go away on their own in 2 or 3 days. You may choose to take over-the-counter pain medicine such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Contact your healthcare provider if the symptoms are not improving or if they are getting worse.

In clinical trials, Shingrix was not associated with serious adverse events. In fact, serious side effects from vaccines are extremely rare. For example, for every 1 million doses of a vaccine given, only one or two people might have a severe allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction happen within minutes or hours after vaccination and include hives, swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or weakness. If you experience these or any other life-threatening symptoms, see a doctor right away.

How You Get Shingles

You dont catch shingles. Chickenpox virus caught earlier in your life reactivates later to cause shingles. You cant catch shingles from someone who has chickenpox.

However, if you have shingles blisters, the virus in the fluid can infect someone who has not had chickenpox and they may develop chickenpox.

• You can get Shingrix at your doctors office or pharmacy. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about getting Shingrix.
• Plan to get your second dose of Shingrix 2 to 6 months after your first dose.
