Fortunately, early treatment for shingles can lower your chances of getting PHN.

For some people, the pain becomes refractory, or resistant to treatment, explains Dr. Rosenquist. So we want to treat shingles as fast as we can ideally as soon as somebody feels a tingling or burning sensation, even before a rash develops.

Sheadds that whenever nerve pain is involved, some people respond to treatment andsome dont.

However, medications taken orally or injected that can target the affected nerves may beable to stun the nervous system into behaving properly. That meanstransmitting the appropriate signal to the brain.

What Happens If You Have It

The most common manifestation of shingles is a rash. The rash of shingles may have an unusual distribution, because it follows the pattern of nerve roots, explains Dr. Golden. A typical feature of shingles is that the rash usually stays on only one side of the body. If untreated, the rash will typically heal on its own, though it may leave scarring and be accompanied by residual pain.

Depending on where shingles develop, other symptomslike hiccups or loss of visioncan occur, per the NIA.

Assess Your Pain Levels

In general, most people with active shingles infections can perform daily activities as tolerated, but rating your pain can help you decide when to do a specific exercise or activity and when to avoid it. Consider using a numerical pain rating scale, which has you rate your pain on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst possible pain.

Make a note of your pain level each day and if a particular activity worsened it. Consider writing it down in a journal or as a note in your phone. That way, you can track which activities affect your pain levels and adjust accordingly.

What To Avoid If You Have Shingles

During flare-ups, you should avoid certain foods so as not to aggravate the virus further. These foods include sugar, refined carbohydrates, saturated fats, alcohol and foods that have high levels of arginine, such as chocolate or tuna. Instead, try eating foods that have high contents of vitamins such as whole grains, eggs, dairy, leafy green vegetables and chicken.

If you are contagious, you should stay inside so you dont spread the virus to others and avoid going to public places until your virus is contained. Since the skin is extremely sensitive, prolonged sun exposure can trigger a flare-up and further damage your skin.

Also known as herpes zoster, shingles is an infection that causes a painful skin rash and blisters in a localized area on one side of the body. There is good evidence that the amino acid L-lysine can help treat the virus and luckily, lysine is found in many foods. The spreading of shingles requires the virus to multiply, and the amino acid arginine that helps the herpes virus replicate. Lysine interferes with arginine and helps prevent herpes from spreading. The average 154-pound human requires 2.1 grams of lysine daily. It has to be ingested either through diet or as a supplement, as your body cannot produce it.

Zoster Sine Herpete : Shingles Without The Rash

It is possible for a person to develop shingles without being affected by the rash, although this is rare. When shingles occurs without the rash being present, this is called zoster sine herpete .

When shingles occurs without a rash, the first symptoms of the condition may involve:

  • A feeling of numbness in a certain area
  • An itchy, burning sensation
  • Generalized aches
  • Hypersensitivity to touch

When shingles is present, even without the rash, sensations will be concentrated in a specific area of the body â commonly the face, neck, one side of the torso or the eyes. However, in the absence of the shingles rash, zoster sine herpete may still rarely lead toneurological and visceral diseases, such as inflammation of the brain , Varizella pneumonia, paralysis of the facial nerves and problems related to keeping oneâs balance or problems with hearing.

Because shingles shares characteristics with many other conditions, including herpes simplex, impetigo, dermatitis herpetiformis and contact dermatitis, it can easily be confused with these conditions. In cases where a rash is not present, a laboratory test will usually be necessary to establish the presence of the varicella zoster virus in the body.

How Can You Prevent Shingles

The shingles virus thrives when your immune system isn’t strong. What you eat can affect the strength of your immunity, explains the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Nutrients to include in your diet to boost your immune system when you have a shingles outbreak include:

  • VitaminA from carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, red peppers, eggs and apricots
  • VitaminC from citrus fruits, tomatoes and papaya
  • VitaminE and zinc from sunflower seeds and fortified cereals

People with shingles may also benefit from eating more foods with vitamin B6, folate, iron and selenium.

Foods to avoid with shingles include those that degrade your immune system. Examples are fast and fried foods, anything high in saturated fat and processed foods. Skip the drive-through and head home to a homemade meal of grilled chicken, steamed broccoli and sweet potatoes.

Other foods to avoid with shingles are those with lots of added sugar and those made with white flour. You might be tempted to help yourself feel better with sweet treats, such as cookies or doughnuts, but these foods have no notable nutrients and do nothing to boost your body’s ability to fight the shingles infection.

The first signs of shingles can be:

  • a tingling or painful feeling in an area of skin
  • a headache or feeling generally unwell

A rash will appear a few days later.

Usually you get the shingles rash on your chest and tummy, but it can appear anywhere on your body including on your face, eyes and genitals.

Chickenpox can be particularly dangerous for certain groups of people. If you have shingles, avoid:

  • women who are pregnant and have not had chickenpox before as they could catch it from you, which may harm their unborn baby
  • people who have a weak immune system, such as someone with HIV or AIDS
  • babies less than one month old, unless it is your own baby, in which case your baby should have antibodies to protect them from the virus

Once your blisters have dried and scabbed over, you are no longer contagious and will not need to avoid anyone.

Is This Shingles Without A Rash Worried

About 5 weeks ago I injured my back, dont remember doing it but it felt like a pulled muscle. I thought nothing of it but then 2 weeks ago I got tender skin on patches of my back and around to my chest. I thought maybe it was a trapped nerve but the back pain is now just about gone. The skin pain is still there, also my right lymph node is enlarged and the skin around it is also tender. The skin on my back and around to my chest feels like it is tender too , like mild.sunburn or goosebumps, it is on my left side. I went to the doctor but he said theres no rash then its not shingles. He sort of put it down to nerve pain but im not convinced. The last few days I feel a bit tired too. There is no rash whatsoever but the skin pain is very painful at times especially on the groin where the lymph node is.
