Shingrix provides strong protection against shingles and PHN. Two doses of Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and PHN. Protection stays above 85% for at least the first four years after you get vaccinated. Shingrix is the preferred vaccine, over Zostavax®, a shingles vaccine in use since 2006.

You should get Shingrix even if in the past you

• are not sure if you had chickenpox

There is no maximum age for getting Shingrix.

If you had shingles in the past, you can get Shingrix to help prevent future occurrences of the disease. There is no specific length of time that you need to wait after having shingles before you can receive Shingrix, but generally you should make sure the shingles rash has gone away before getting vaccinated.

If you had Zostavax in the recent past, you should wait at least eight weeks before getting Shingrix. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine the best time to get Shingrix.

About 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles during their lifetime.

If youve had chickenpox, you are at risk for shingles. More than 99% of Americans born before 1980 have had chickenpox, even if they dont remember it.

Your risk of getting shingles and having serious complications increases as you get older.

About 1 in 10 people who get shingles develop nerve pain that lasts for months or years after the rash goes away. This is called postherpetic neuralgia and is the most common complication of shingles.

Shingles may lead to other serious complications involving the eye, including blindness. Very rarely, it can also lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, brain inflammation or death.

What Parts Of Medicare Cover The Shingles Vaccine

Original Medicare Part A and Part B doesnt cover the shingles vaccine. However, there are other Medicare plans that may cover at least part of the costs. These include:

• Medicare Part C. Medicare Advantage is a plan you can buy through a private insurance company. It may offer additional benefits not covered by original Medicare, including some preventive services. Many Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage, which would cover the shingles vaccine.

• The shingles vaccine has only been tested in adults over age 50 years and immunocompromised adults above 18 years thus, there is no recommendation for the vaccine for younger ages by the FDA.
• You should not get the vaccine if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous Shingrix dose.
• You have tested negative for immunity to varicella-zoster virus .
• You have an active shingles infection.

Who Should Get Shingrix

Adults 50 years and older should get two doses of Shingrix, separated by 2 to 6 months. Adults 19 years and older who have or will have weakened immune systems because of disease or therapy should also get two doses of Shingrix. Shingrix is the first FDA-approved shingles vaccine in over 10 years. It is used to prevent shingles . This is the same virus that causes chickenpox in children. If an individual has been infected with chickenpox in the past, herpes zoster will stay in the body’s nerve roots and could later become active again. The reactivated virus causes shingles. Shingrix helps prevent shingles, avoiding troublesome symptoms such as rash, blisters, and pain.

The Shingrix vaccine works by exposing the body to small doses of the inactive virus. This helps the body to develop an immunity to herpes zoster or shingles. It is typically used by adults who are 50 years old and older. This includes those who have received a live zoster vaccine .

Children can receive financial assistance through the federal Vaccines for Children program. This is for kids who are:

First of all, dont panic. Shingles shouldnt be taken lightly, but your overall odds of developing it before the shortage ends are low.

Because older people are at higher risk for shingles, MGHs Dr. Oaklander suggests that younger, healthier people might consider waiting a few more months to get vaccinated, giving older and sicker people precedence.

Should you bother trying to get the vaccine?

According to the literature and the CDC, and if youre not allergic, yes. If youre at least 50 or have a compromised immune system, you should consider getting the vaccine. In a statement, the CDC recommends using the Vaccine Finder or calling local pharmacies to see which stores have it in stock. The agency also recommends putting your name on a wait-list if your pharmacy has one.

Should you get the first dose if youre not sure you can get the second?

There are no clinical studies showing how effective one dose of Shingrix is, but specialists I spoke with agree it probably provides at least some protection.

CVS tells its pharmacists to prioritize patients who need the second shot, says spokeswoman Amy Lanctot in an email. So if your pharmacy offers to put your name on a list of people waiting for the second dose, that could help.
