Vaccines For Adults Increasing Opportunities For Health
Historically, vaccines were deemed to be only for children. However, vaccines for adults are becoming increasingly common and necessary. Most adults think only of the tetanus booster recommended every 10 years and even then, many adults only get the vaccine if they injure themselves. In 2005, the Tdap vaccine was licensed as an improved version of the typical tetanus booster, Td. The newer version also contains a component to protect against pertussis . All adults, especially those who are going to be around young infants, should get the Tdap vaccine. Adults often unwittingly pass pertussis to young infants for whom the disease can be fatal. In 2012, the CDC recommended that pregnant women get a dose of Tdap during each pregnancy between 27 and 36 weeks gestation. In 2019, the CDC recommended that Tdap or Td vaccine could be used for booster dosing every 10 years.
Influenza vaccines, available since the 1940s, are now recommended for most adults. Vaccines like MMR and chickenpox are recommended for adults who have not had the diseases, and vaccines including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, pneumococcus, and meningococcus are recommended for sub-groups of the adult population. The HPV vaccine became available in 2006. In 2018, the license was expanded to include people up to 45 years of age.
The first formal adult immunization schedule was published in 2002 and is updated annually.
Can People Who Got The Shingles Vaccine Be Around Babies
Yes, people who had the shingles vaccine can be around babies. Unlike the previously available Zostavax vaccine, Shingrix does not contain live, weakened virus, so it does not replicate and people do not get a rash. Therefore, there is no chance of transmitting the virus to babies who are susceptible to chickenpox. Watch as Dr. Offit discusses being around babies after receiving a shingles vaccine in this short video, part of the series Talking About Vaccines with Dr. Paul Offit.
How Effective Is The Vaccine
The vaccine will reduce your chances of developing shingles by more than a third. If you do go on to have shingles, having the vaccine can make the symptoms milder.
Speak to a healthcare professional about getting other vaccines at the same time so they can advise what’s best for your individual circumstances.
You should ideally wait seven days between the coronavirus vaccination and shingles vaccination.

Zostavax And The Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine
The Summary of Product Characteristics for Zostavax, the shingles vaccine used in the UK, states that the vaccine should not be given at the same time as the Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine . This is because a clinical trial by the manufacturer had suggested this might make Zostavax less effective. However, the Department of Health advice is that the two vaccines can be given at the same time. This is based on expert advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation , and on research that showed no evidence that people receiving both vaccines together had any increased risk of developing shingles. Types Of Olive Leaf Extract: Shingles Relief
Olive leaf extract comes in several different forms, both topical and as an oral supplement.
Here at East Park Research, our patented olive leaf extract called d-Lenolate comes in a 100% organic supplement, skin care and hair care formulas. Our unique extraction process retains all the necessary nutrients for the olive leaf extract to be as potent as possible to fight microbes.
For shingles particularly, many of our customers find that taking olive leaf extract as a supplement helps combat the virus from the inside, oftentimes quicker and more successfully than over-the-counter medicines.
Others like to use a topical olive leaf extract solution to provide instant relief on the pain or itching from shingles. Applying a high quality, all-natural olive leaf extract to the skin works as a powerful microbe exterminator, reducing inflammation and calming the rash quickly. A gentle cleansing bar with olive leaf extract is also available, so you can wash without irritating skin conditions like shingles.
A combination of both supplements and topical olive leaf extract brings even faster relief for shingles, so you can get back to living life without the painful rash.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Shingrix
Studies show that Shingrix is safe. The vaccine helps your body create a strong defense against shingles. As a result, you are likely to have temporary side effects from getting the shots. The side effects might affect your ability to do normal daily activities for 2 to 3 days.
Most people got a sore arm with mild or moderate pain after getting Shingrix, and some also had redness and swelling where they got the shot. Some people felt tired, had muscle pain, a headache, shivering, fever, stomach pain, or nausea. Some people who got Shingrix experienced side effects that prevented them from doing regular activities. Symptoms went away on their own in about 2 to 3 days. Side effects were more common in younger people.
You might have a reaction to the first or second dose of Shingrix, or both doses. If you experience side effects, you may choose to take over-the-counter pain medicine such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Guillain-Barré syndrome , a serious nervous system disorder, has been reported very rarely after Shingrix. There is also a very small increased risk of GBS after having shingles.
If you experience side effects from Shingrix, you should report them to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System . Your doctor might file this report, or you can do it yourself through the VAERS websiteexternal icon, or by calling 1-800-822-7967.
If you have any questions about side effects from Shingrix, talk with your doctor.
How Shingles Can Increase The Risk Of Other Health Issues
Frank McGeorge, MD, Local 4’s Good Health Medical Expert
There are many reasons to get the shingles vaccination, and its important to know that shingles can increase the risk of other health issues.
Shingles are caused by the varicella-zoster virus — its the same virus responsible for chicken pox. In fact, thats how you get shingles when you get chicken pox, the virus goes dormant, hiding out in some of the nerves in your body. Later in life, it can reawaken, leading to shingles which are now linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
A study looking at over 200,000 people, some for as long as 16 years, published in the journal of the American Heart Association found people who developed shingles were at an approximately 30% higher long-term risk of having a stroke or heart attack. For stroke, this was especially the case between 5 and 12 years from having had shingles — for a heart attack, the highest risk was in the period 9 to 12 years from having shingles.
Dr. Sam Kazziha is an interventional cardiologist at Henry Ford Health.
At least 33% of us will have shingles, so that should increase and enhance people thinking that I need to be vaccinated, said Kazziha. This is something very important to do because long term it has an impact on your survivability or having a heart attack.

Who Should Not Get Shingrix
You should not get Shingrix if you:
- Have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or after a dose of Shingrix.
- Currently have shingles.
- Currently are pregnant. Women who are pregnant should wait to get Shingrix.
If you have a minor illness, such as a cold, you may get Shingrix. But if you have a moderate or severe illness, with or without fever, you should usually wait until you recover before getting the vaccine.
Cdc Recommends New Shingles Vaccine To Replace Older One
Shingrix is recommended over Zostavax, the existing shingles vaccine
Revaccination with Shingrix is recommended for people who have received Zostavax
A new adult vaccine has received a double thumbs-up from the American federal health system.
On the heels of the Food and Drug Administration approval of Shingrix, a new vaccine from GlaxoSmithKline for the prevention of shingles, a federal committee of immunization experts voted Wednesday to recommend Shingrix for all Americans 50 and older.
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful, itchy rash that develops on one side of the body and can last for two to four weeks. One in three Americans will develop shingles in their lifetime, with the risk increasing to half of adults over 85, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which advises the CDC on vaccine usage, also recommended that adults who received Zostavax, a shingles vaccine made by Merck, be revaccinated with Shingrix.
Additionally, the committee expressed its preference for Shingrix over Zostavax.
GlaxoSmithKline says Shingrix will be available shortly.
Zostavax was licensed and recommended by the committee in 2006 for people 60 and older, including those who have had an episode of shingles. Until now, it has been the only approved vaccine to protect against the virus.

Are There Any Reasons I Shouldn’t Have The Shingles Vaccine
You shouldn’t have the shingles vaccine if:
- you’ve had a severe reaction to any of the ingredients in the vaccine
- you’ve had a severe reaction to a previous dose of the chickenpox vaccine
If you don’t have a severely weakened immune system, the shingles vaccine you’ll be offered contains a small trace of pork gelatine.
Gelatine is a common and essential ingredient in many medicines, including some vaccines.
Many faith groups, including Muslim and Jewish communities, have approved the use of gelatine-containing vaccines. It is, however, an individual choice whether or not to receive the shingles vaccine.
How To Take Olive Leaf Extract
Olive leaf extract is usually consumed in capsule form, and capsules are usually 500 mg. Based on studies, a standard dosage would be 1000 mg a day, split into two daily doses.
For comparison purposes, consuming olive oil provides the equivalent of tens of milligrams a day. Despite being an order of magnitude lower, thats not nothing it does improve lipid and cholesterol profiles, partly because the fat content of olive oilabsent from olive leaf extractalso helps with cholesterol. So there is a good argument for consuming both olive oil and olive leaf extract if your main concern is cholesterol. However, olive oil probably wont provide the other benefits of olive leaf extract.
Most indications are that timing is not very important. However, given the evidence that olive leaf extract improves insulin sensitivity partly by reducing starch absorption, people who wish to use it for that purpose may want to take their olive leaf extract 30 to 120 minutes before meals.
If using an olive leaf skin cream, apply twice a day, or shortly after sun exposure. If applying before sun exposure, youd want to put the olive leaf cream in first, let it set in, then apply the sunscreen over it. In other words, sunscreen has to lay on top of your skin forming a barrier, whereas olive leaf cream needs to get into your skin.

Olive Leaf Extract For Acne And Eczema
If you suffer from chronic acne outbreaks and you are looking for an effective and affordable home treatment, then olive leaf extract might be just the thing you need. The cause of acne can basically be boiled down to a hormone imbalance.
The responsibility for balancing these hormones and cleaning the blood rests with the liver. A weakened or overworked liver is unable to keep your hormones in balance leading to potential acne outbreaks that even the most expensive acne creams and treatments are powerless to prevent.
Toxins known as mycotoxins are produced by mold or yeast and spread through your bloodstream and major organs. These toxins weaken the liver and are considered largely responsible for hormonal imbalances that lead to acne. Olive leaf extract has powerful anti-fungal properties and is able to destroy the toxins which weaken the liver.
As well as cleaning the liver, olive leaf extract is also an effective weapon against the bacteria that aggravates the symptoms of acne. This combination of effects makes olive leaf extract an effective acne treatment either when used alone or in combination with your conventional treatments.
In the same way that it can help with acne, the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions of olive leaf extract might help treat those suffering from eczema.

How Does Olive Leaf Extract Help With Shingles
Since shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the uncomfortable rash can be treated with antiviral medicines like olive leaf extract. Shingles can be treated easily at home with olive leaf extract due to its broad-spectrum benefits which can penetrate the infected cells to stop the virus from replicating.
Olive leaf extract disrupts the viral amino acid production in shingles, preventing the virus from assembling at the cell membrane. This quickly leaves the virus in a weakened position as the skin cells are unable to contain or spread the virus.
Symptoms Of Shingles In The Eye
When you have shingles in the eye, the blistering rash will form on your eyelids, forehead, and possibly on the tip or side of your nose. This rash might show up at the same time as the skin rash, or weeks after the skin blisters have gone away. Some people only have symptoms in their eye.
Along with the rash, you might have:
- burning or throbbing pain in your eye
- redness around and in the eye
You might also have swelling in parts of your eye, such as:
- your retina, which is the light-sensitive layer in the back of your eye
- your cornea, which is the clear layer in the front of your eye
If you have one or more of these symptoms, call your primary care doctor or an eye doctor for an appointment. The sooner you get treatment, the less likely it is that youll have long-term complications.

What Are Symptoms Of Shingles In The Eye
Shingle symptoms include a blistering rash on the eyelids, forehead and possibly the tip or side of the nose. It may accompany a skin rash or show up weeks after the blistering skin rash disappears. Some may only experience ocular shingles without a shingles rash on the skin. However, it usually occurs in one eye on the side of the face with the rash. It usually follows once the shingles body rash has gone.
Other symptoms of shingles include:
- Burning sensation in the eye
- Throbbing pain in the eye
- Redness in and around the eye
- Light sensitivity
- Swelling on your eyelid, retina or cornea
If you experience one or more of the symptoms above, you should call your eye care professional and book an optical appointment. The sooner you treat these symptoms, the less likely you are to have long-term complications.
